C Call to Order: Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis called the Meeting to order at the above captioned date. Roll Call: Present Chairperson Miry Sue Lewis Commissioner Ethel Pacheco Commissioner Sylvia Herron Commissioner Margaret Araujo Pledge of Allegiance: All present participated Certitication of Agenda Posting: Agenda posted by Maggie Romo and.read by Lorraine Susan (friend) Approval of Minutes: Commissioner M~ugaret Araujo made a motion to approve the Agenda for 01/12/07 Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis second the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Public Orals: (Items on Agenda Only) Laura Alderetc, Marketing and Grants Dept Manager stated that she would like to know what are the goals and objectives/past accomplishments of the Women's Commission. Phyllis Cooper-Lyons mentioned that Women's Commission needed a Theme or Topic to begin preparations for March Events Board Orals: Friends of the Commissioners wanted Lo know the maximum number of friends that the commission can have. [t was stated that there could be up to 12 friends, Lhere would be no screening. They would work with Commissioners to give good ideas and suggestions. Sylvia Hen~on spoke about Peace and Joy Shelter: on how to support teens in High Schools, to mentor all females (young women) invite to Women's Health Fair, Spring/Fall Festivals, Women's Month and Christmas Project. It was stated that for the month of March there are various events going on. They need a motivational speaker, Phyllis Cooper-Lyons mentioned that she wanted to get Judge Maybclline from Channel 9, to be the speaker for the Women's Commission. She would bring in a lot women and in turn they could charge attendance since they don't now. Laura, Marketing and Grants Manager mentioned that we would have to check if the cost is in our budget and iP she would be available for the time we need her. Mrs. Herron stated that they could then charge $5.00 for lunches since they have not charged in over e two years. Phyllis said they have to have at least three people iu mind in case one falls out, start the negotiating process. We need someone who addresses women's issues, powerful impact. We can also use our neighboring friends as motivational speakers (sub speakers) in a spiritual and natural level. Mrs. Herron was sharing her shopping experience for Last Christmas for Lhe Peace & Joy Sheller Children. Mattel Toy Company gave her 70% off all toys at the EI Segundo store. They purchased 918 toys for $3,600.00. She mentioned that this year all the letters to the sponsors need to go out early so shat if they decline we have time to seek other vendors that are willing Lo donate or give discounts. Mrs. Irene mentioned the TV show Oprah and wanted to purchase the Video or DVD clipping where Oprah goes info high schools and challenges the students on gelling along, caring for one another and Mrs. Irene wanted ro take that to our schools and show it to the students of Lynwood High. Phyllis mentioned that the city has events and outings for the city youth such as the Youth Summit, Lynwood has a program already. It was also mentioned about a talk show where Monique (actress) comes out talking about women in prison. `9 could be your Cell Mate". Women's Commission wands to help young and old women, helping others in jails or shelter homes. Chairperson Ethel Pacheco mentioned Los Patrinos where young girls can be helped. Many ideas can be broadened. Commissioner Margaret Araujo stated that she had an appointment with Mr. Craigan, President of Lynwood High School, he is an untapped outside source that will help with programs. Mrs. Araujo was wailing for the holidays to be over so that they meet and put things into place. Phyllis requested that there be a theme for this years' Women's Commission. Names were tossed around and Maggie Romo, minuses clerk suggested "Women on a Mission for 2007" the motion was second by Commissioner Margaret Araujo, the motion carried unanimously. Phyllis stated that the flyer that was going to be sent had to have the name and info on motivational speaker and that it needed more publicity on the Press. Adjournment: Women's Commission decided on a luncheon and meeting for Tuesday the 13'~ of February oP 2007 at 4:OOpm following a social hour for luncheon al Lhe VIP room in Bateman Hall. r l _ _ ,__1 Lynwood Women's Cornmission The Lynwood Women's Commission makes a commitment towazd encouraging, inspiring and facilitating the promotion of women's equality to the betterment of women's lives. The Commission was formed to work on behalf of women's issues and to help women become awaze of their utmost capabilities. Its role is to maintain an active liaison with citizen groups concerned with identifying and removing obstacles to the development of women's full potential. The Commission is responsible for. 1. Fostering mutual respect and understanding between men and women 2. Making such studies in any field of community relationships as will in its judgment, aid in effectuating the rights of women and 3. Recommending to the City Council programs, plans and activities which will increase community awazeness and good will towazds women among all residents of the city and open new opportunities for all women to become involved in all phases of community life. The duties of the Commission are: - To propose, develop and recommend programs and plans intended to promote the full acceptance of women in all aspects of community life without regazd to race, religion or national origin; provided however; that all such programs and plans shall be subject to the approval of the City Council, - To cooperate and assist those community agencies engaged in fostering mutual understanding and respect for women's rights - To cooperate with city departments, agencies and commissions in identifying and ameliorating women's problems with which they may be concerned; provided, however, that nothing herein shall be construed as authorizing the commission to act as a hearing agency or tribunal in a personal matter - To examine possible sources of conflict in the field of women's relations and to provide a forum for the expression of differences of opinion and clarification of issues pertaining to women; and - To recommend to the City Council and various city departments and agencies changes in procedures, policies and/or legislation for the purpose of improving women's place in the community.
