McCall Arts & Humanities Council
Public Art Project
Project Goal
The McCall Arts & Humanities Council is working to bring a piece of site-specific public art to McCall. The intent
of this project is to provide civic beautification and to work with artists to use art to help define an aspect of McCall. Public Art has the potential to positively effect business
areas and improve the publics’ perception of a place, and inform visitors about what is unique or special in a place.
The McCall Arts & Humanities Council’s Public Art Task Force identified
the airport corner as a key focal point for a public-art project. This decision was made because of the historical importance of aviation to McCall and the future significance of this
site as the gateway to the city. Additionally, public art would support the current redevelopment efforts being coordinated for this site.
Public Art Process
The public art selection
and creation process is modeled after the Boise Arts Commission (BAC) award winning public art program. Karen Bubb, Director of Public Art for BAC, is advising and supporting our efforts.
Call
for artists will be developed and mailed to regional public artists. Proposals will be evaluated according to artistic quality of work represented in slides, appropriateness of type
of work for planned project, artist’s experience, resume and conceptual approach statement.
The jury, composed of business people, community leaders, artists, members of MIC, and local
officials, will meet to select no more than three finalists who will be paid to prepare a preliminary design for our site. The selected finalists will travel to McCall to present their
designs in a public presentation and visit the site. Finalist proposals will include a brief project description, concept drawings and/or scale model, Time-line, work schedule, and
installation requirements. Each final design will be displayed publicly and comment will be sought at the presentations and through informal ballot boxes where people can express their
preferences.
The selection panel will choose one finalist proposal to recommend for commissioned work. The McCall Arts and Humanities Council and the McCall City Council must approve
the panel recommendation. Once the project is approved, a contract will be drawn and signed with the selected artist.
