HomeMy Public PortalAboutPublic Comment - Rolf Godon (7) 4-21-23 to: Town of Truckee Town Council re: General Plan 2040 I am aware of a lack of discussion and language focusing on the subject of TOURISM in this update. It is clearly an aspect of our community that is of high priority, Over the past few years, culminating over the past year or so, tourist use of our area has spiked significantly, with this recent winter it being in crisis mode for residents and tourists alike. The subject is also in the worldwide news on a regular basis with jurisdictions ranging from towns to cities to counties as well as countries trying to manage over uses of their areas. It has and continues to be studied here in the Truckee/Tahoe area. One the one hand it is a strong economic driver while at the same time putting huge stressors on our roadways, our recreation areas and the human as well as natural environment. Quality of life for residents is eroded, safety and well being is jeopardized. In particular, wildfire danger is increased and evacuation options are reduced. Obviously the issue needs continued evaluation and action. It seems to me that the General Plan needs to contain some strong and specific language to address this. Perhaps something like the following: 1. No new short term rental spaces such as hotels, motels, STRs and campgrounds. 2. Work with surrounding jurisdictions to incorporate similar restrictions. 3, Clear noise and light restrictions. 4. Use of media to inform visitors or would be visitors of local conditions such as wildfire risk, housing availability and crowding conditions at outdoor areas. HOSPITAL: There is clearly a disconnect between the Hospital district and the Town. Also, it seems obvious that the Hospital district is on a highly significant growth trajectory. This is in sharp contrast to the “moderate” growth” trajectory outlined in the 2040 general Plan proposal. There are other contradictory messages. Whether this is appropriately addressed through 2040 and/or via other means is not known to me. It clearly requires a high level of collaborative effort between the two jurisdictions. Thankyou for your time and consideration, Rolf Godon
