PROCLAMATION
Truckee, California
WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from September 15th through October 15th each year. The observation began in 1968 as one week, and in 1988 became the
month celebration that it is today. September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition,
Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively; and
WHEREAS, this month highlights and celebrates the rich histories, cultures, arts, food, music and traditions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central
and South American countries. While also recognizing that these nations are not homogenous and this month celebrates, honors, and pays tribute to all; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic population is 13% of our Truckee population and plays a vital role in our Truckee community, workforce and our economy; and
WHEREAS, the Town honors and recognizes the significant contributions of the Sierra Community House Promotora Program, a group of Latina women who provide education, outreach, and peer
support to families in Truckee and the Tahoe region. The Promotoras are invaluable leaders in our region who strengthen the connections in our community through culturally relevant outreach;
and
WHEREAS, the Promotoras help bring vital health and social services to the Latinx community, while also enriching the community by celebrating cultural customs through events such as
Día del Niño, the Mexican Heritage Festival, and Día de los Muertos; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Truckee is committed to recognizing Hispanic, Latino and Latinx culture and heritage as an important component of the town identity and its inclusive community.
Now, therefore, be it proclaimed, by the Mayor of the Town of Truckee, that September 15th – October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month and calls its observance to all residents.
