HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution 91-30981 1 1 RESOLUTION NO. 91 -3098 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY SUPPORTING THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF LONG BEACH FOR THE SOUTHERN CALI- FORNIA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT'S (SCRTD) CONTINUED USE OF THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES CONNECTED WITH THE BLUE LINE WHEREAS, the people and the City of Long Beach welcomed the inauguration of Blue Line service between Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles on July 1, 1990, as an important new public transportation service for both Long Beach residents who commute to work between here and Los Angeles and Long Beach's visitor and convention industry, and WHEREAS, the Blue Line, carries an average of 32,000 riders daily after its first year of operation, more than double the ridership forecast at its inauguration a year ago, it is increasingly important to the economic life of the City of Long Beach, and WHEREAS, a continued increase in Blue Line ridership will reduce automobile traffic on area freeways and on Long Beach's downtown streets, this will directly and positively affect the air - quality and quality of life of Long Beach citizens, and WHEREAS, public opinion polls of Blue Line riders, and more importantly, potential Blue Line riders, show that concern about public safety is a crucial factor in whether or not a person will use the Blue Line, and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Temple City does not see any rational or compelling reason to cancel the current contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for public safety on the Blue Line which is responsible for this unblemished record of public safety, and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE CITY, AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City Council does hereby request the Board of Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District to continue the contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for Law Enforcement Services connected with the Blue Line. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this resolution, and it shall thereupon be in full force and effect.
