SUMMARY STATEMENT: Attached is a list of current City Council Advisory Committees and the
Council Members who are designated liaisons for those committees. It is my understanding that the role of the Council Member is not to speak for the City Council in the meetings, but
rather to facilitate communication and understanding between the Council and the committee. I would recommend that the Council clearly define that role as new assignments are made.
I would also recommend that as a parallel action we work with the Council and Advisory Committees to develop a standardized charter and mission for our advisory committees to clearly
define the role the Council expects the committee to play. Historically that role has been one of advising the Council on policy matters, providing input to the department head on budget,
and assisting the department heads on items the department head requests assistance with.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Assign Council liaisons for advisory committees and direct the staff
to develop a draft standardized advisory committee charter in consultation with the advisory committees.
