Leesburg Town Council Sets Date of Special Election for
November 7, 2017
Special election will fill the council seat vacated by Mayor Kelly Burk.
Leesburg, VA (January 17, 2017) – Pending approval by the Circuit Court, the Town of Leesburg
will hold a special election on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, to fill the remainder of a Council
Member term expiring on December 31, 2018. This Council Member seat was vacated by Mayor
Kelly Burk on January 1, 2017, when she became mayor.
On January 9, 2017, the Leesburg Town Council appointed Hugh Forsythe to fill the seat on an
interim basis until the special election.
In order to be eligible to run in the special election, candidates must be qualified to vote in
Leesburg Town Council elections and must have been residents of the Commonwealth of
Virginia for at least one year immediately preceding the election.
Interested candidates are required to file certain documents, including a Statement of
Economic Interests, a Certificate of Candidate Qualification, a Declaration of Candidacy, an d a
petition of registered voters with a minimum of 125 signatures, with the Loudoun County
General Registrar in order to the placed on the ballot. These forms are available for download
from the Virginia State Board of Elections website at www.elections.virginia.gov/candidatepac-
info. The deadline for filing as a candidate is Tuesday, June 13, 2017.
