This same strategy is working well to attract tourists to Saugatauck, Michigan and Grand Junction, Colorado. This type of cultural tourism is a significant way for areas such as McCall to distinguish itself as a desirable and culturally worthwhile place to visit. We hope to offer both visitors and residents cultural options to rival our natural surroundings. The project would include the siting of 5-10 bases on city property that would allow for different sizes of outdoor art such as sculptures, benches, or carvings to be on display. A Call to Artists would be distributed to regional artists inviting them to display their work for a 12-month period. A local jury would select artwork to display. The artists would install their work and be responsible for removing their piece at the end of the show. During the year the pieces would be featured in “Art Walk” maps and marketed through press releases and public service announcements. The artists benefit from the opportunity to display their work and perhaps even sell their work at the end of the show. The community benefits from an annual event that changes the look of certain venues and that attracts educated and affluent visitors. Potential sites for the first series of bases might include the public library, city hall, Art Roberts Park, Mill Park, Legacy Park, Toll Station Parking Lot, Golf Course, or the fire station. Clearly, the selection of the sites would require input from the city of McCall as well as the community. We are asking assistance from the city of McCall in insuring the artwork while it is on display. As the art will essentially be on loan from the artists we ask the city to provide liability coverage that would insure the artwork against damage or theft. It would also require some coverage against injury, although it would be rather difficult to injure yourself by viewing a sculpture. I encourage you to visit the website in Michigan to see how the project looks in their community. Artroundtown.com is their web address. We are also seeking grant funding to assist with the project, and would formally request approval from the City to display the art before accepting any grant. –Respectfully submitted, Keiser Ruemmele, McCall Arts and Humanities Council Staff has researched the insurance question and the estimated cost is $1.50 per $100 of value. Staff would require the Arts and Humanities Council to coordinate with the Parks and Recreation Committee for any City Park locations.
