We are researching in getting a teacher here to help with English. It has not been forgotten, we are looking into it. Member Barbara Battle - Do you have the materials for the class? (Chair Paulette Bradley-let me refer to Marisa.) Marisa Cordova -What type of materials? (Member Barbara Battle-To teach the class) There are currently ESL Classes through the University of Mexico they have an extension school in Los Angeles. The class is coming to an end in March but we are expecting to resume in September. It's all going to depend on their budget; they are pretty sure that they will continue. Many of you have had the services we offer and most of you have not. Maravilla represents 1'he Gas Company No-Cost Energy Conservation program which includes your water heater, heater, windows and doors for free. The qualifications are based on your income. All senior citizens automatically qualify because they are on Social Security. The program is funded by The Gas Company. We are licensed and bonded by the State to do the work which includes the weather stripping, window caulking, attic insulation and it's all no cost. The program is called No-Cost but it is not free. Free means it's not costing anybody anything. The reason we call it No-Cost is because in every gas bill you see a 10 or I S cent surcharge; this goes into a fund that serves underserved population. So everybody is already paying for it, so why not take advantage of it. All you have to do is give me a call with your gas account number. This program is for renters and owners and because you are Edison customers if you have a refrigerator that is I S-years or older you may also exchange it with a new energy efficient Whirl Pool refrigerator because Edison is one of our partners in the program. There is a special number for trailer park homes. If you're not on Social security the income level for a family of two is $30,500 or less working or not, family of three $34,500 or less and it goes up depending on how many people are in the family. The Gas Company can do this repair service every 10-years or more. We speak Spanish and English and I do work with a bilingual group. Pubic Orals: Sylvia Herron - 1 have two issues today one is about the lockers in the exercise room. Since I understand they are not being utilized I was wondering if the clubs in the center can use them for their supplies. The other issue is about the lunch bunch. All the clubs here have been asked to donate a Basket for the Easter Party. When L asked about the lunch bunch doing it, 1 was told they are not a club. Since they are already utilizing our senior center and they are charging for the tickets. 1 think that if it's not in place they should at least donate something towards our parties or pay 10 percent like all the rest of us have to do. Marisa Cordova- llu is the one actually coordinating the Cinco de Mayo event but he has asked that group to help him coordinate and put the event on. It is not the group's event it is a Senior Center event. He asked for volunteers and that's the specific group that volunteered. Mary Fuller - On the ESL Class are you looking for a certified person? (Marisa-that's a good question as laig as someone is willing to come forward and teach the ESL Class and has the material and has done it in the past. 1 don't see why we can't look at that idea.) Percy Brown - hi regards to the gas bill, remember utility bills are going up. Remember seniors do have the right to eliminate the utility tax if you haven't done so. We still have an empty seat on the Senior Council. 1 was wondering what was being done about that. Both you and the City Council know how I feel about that. The both of you have heard the phrase. When you fill it 1 don't want it to look like a women's commission again. Lucinda - A couple of months ago 1 asked a question on who is certified to give First Aid/CPR in case of an emergency and up until now 1 haven't received an answer. The Casino trip coming up, will we have someone that will be translating? )f there is a person that is CPR certified they should place a sign stating that someone is certified and the name of the person. I would like to ask the bingo lady when will we have a report stating the winnings and how much was collected. Can we have a monthly report? Board Orals: Chair Paulette Bradley 1) Regarding the lockers comment, that's a good idea 1 was not aware that in the exercise room apparently people come and go with their belongings and they are not using the lockers. 2) La Familia group, it was my assumption that they wanted to be a bona fide club with the rest of the clubs to go through the process but 1 don't know enough about it. Perhaps we need to look at that and bring it back for discussion. 3) Regarding the vacant seat on Senior Council, Mc Brown we have approached City Council and 1 will approach them again tonight. I don't know what the hold up is, they are aware that there is a vacancy. I understand there are some applications on file so I will bring it to their attention at the Council meeting tonight that we are waiting to have the vacant seat filled. 4) In regards to Lucinda's questions, at this moment I am not aware of anyone in our membership that is CPR certified. We will have to get back to you and the groups on this matter to see if staff or members are certified. I understand that from time to time there are classes available. My suggestion is that when they become available the City brings someone here to train City workers, staff and some of us would like to join in the training to become certified. Regarding the translation for the casino trip we are counting on you our membership to buy a ticket and go and participate. I'm going to leave that up to you all. In regards to the monthly bingo meetings to discuss money collected for bingo and where it goes. 1 am not going to preamp the meeting, because thats how bingo works, you pay to get in and win the money. I will suggest to the Bingo leadership that they have a monthly meeting so they can discuss it or at least the people that have questions can talk to the people that run bingo so they can have a clear understanding of how it works. Jose Trejo -These trips are basically put together by the Senior Advisory Council and volunteers here. We encourage everyone to take part in making these field tips more entertaining and exciting. If there is a need for aSpanish-speaking person that someone come on board to help out so we don't leave anybody out. Don't feel like this is only being catered to one group. We want you to come on board and help out. Mrs. Bradley mentioned we have an open door and welcome all volunteers. Adjournment: Member Barbara Battle made a motion to adjourn, 2"`~ by Member D. Joyce Edner. By unanimous consent the meeting adjourned at 12:45 p.m.
