Town Broker Report -FY24 Health &Dental Insurance Options &Renewal
Town Broker George Blaisdell reported the following to the IAC.
Health Insurance
The Broker provided an overview of where we are in the renewal process looking at a proposed
9.9%health insurance premium increase with Mass General Brigham (down from almost 16%).He
explained that inflation alone is 8-12%and then factor the high MLR at 94%.He reminded the committee
of the rich design plans the Town has.
The Broker explained that subscribers can get involved and help affect the future premiums
through helping to control prescription drug costs and the cost of care at expensive facilities. He talked
about the costplusdrugs.com program,as well as educating subscribers on the differences between higher
cost and lower cost facilities that may be providing the same level of care with the same equipment.
The committee was very interested in learning more, bringing back information to their groups
and setting up education for the groups. The Benefits Administrator suggested setting up informational
meetings to educate subscribers in the discussed cost savings measures.
Dental Insurance
The Broker reviewed the current proposal for a 7%increase in dental premium with Altus Dental
(which started at 38%).Inflation here is 6-8%.The current insurance has been well received, with no
complaints. It also provides additional benefits through the preventative maximum waiver. The Town is not
done with the process.Other proposals are being reviewed.
