Leesburg, VA (February 7, 2017) – The Leesburg Police Department announced today that Wesley C. Thompson has been promoted to the rank of Captain and will be assigned as the Commander to the Administrative and Support Services Division. “Captain Thompson’s commitment to the Leesburg community is evident by his track record and I look forward to his continued dedication to public service in his new role,” said Gregory Brown, Leesburg Chief of Police. Captain Thompson began employment as a police officer with the Leesburg Police Department on January 3, 1989. He was promoted to Corporal in 1997, followed by promotion to Sergeant in 1998 when he was tasked with supervising six patrol officers working 12-hour rotating shifts. He was transferred to the Special Services Section in September 2001 where he was responsible for bicycle patrol officers, motorcycle officers, crime prevention officers, coordination of all special events, and the School Resource Officers. He served in this capacity until January 2003 when he was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to patrol services. The new assignment entailed supervising a platoon comprised of three sergeants and approximately 15 officers. In 2008, Captain Thompson was given the tasks of the Information Services Section Supervisor. This assignment included managing the Emergency Communications Center, Records, Property and Evidence, Training and Recruitment as well as managing the fleet and facility. In 2011 , he transitioned to the Office of Special Projects and helped oversee the renovation of the support building. In addition to his daily responsibilities, Captain Thompson has assisted with Special Olympics fundraising by coordinating softball tournaments with other public safety agencies to raise money for mentally and physically challenged children. He has assisted with Christmas in April by assisting with home improvements for the needy, elderly and persons living on fixed incomes. In 2007, he began an outreach initiative aimed at lower income and single parent families. The goal was to provide a traditional holiday dinner to these families the week of Thanksgiving. The “holiday dinner project” as it known, just celebrated its 10th consecutive year. Captain Thompson has been recognized on a number of occasions for his commitment to public service. He has attended the Virginia Police Chief’s Foundation course Institute for Leadership in Changing Times - Emerging Leaders in Law Enforcement Course which was held in conjunction with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the Police Executive Leadership School held in conjunction with Richmond University in 2005 and is a graduate of the 241st Session of the FBI National Academy. # # #
