MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY,
MAY 18, 2000 AT 0830 HRS. IN THE GULF STREAM TOWN HALL, 100 SEA RD.
CULT STREAM, FLORIDA.
The following persons were in attendance:
William F. Koch Jr., Mayor
Robert Schultz, Police Chief
Gary Ward, Dep. Police Chief
Lt. M. Woods, Delray Beach P.D.
Mark Henderson, Gulf Stream Golf Club
Kris Garrison, Gulf Stream Town Mgr.
Ms. Gibb, Head Mistress, Gulf Stream School
Ms. Wiliins, Gulf Stream School
Ms. Sink, Gulf Stream School
Steve, of Britt Sewer Services
Mayor Koch explained that it is necessary that the Town do as much as
possible in preparation for a storm and subsequent clean -up since
other agencies may not be available to assist immediately after a
serious storm event.
The Mayor stated that the Police Department would continue to have
available an updated list of those residents who are unable to care
for themselves and evacuate when that time comes. It will be the re-
sponsibility of the Police Department to assist them with evacuation.
Chief Schultz commented that during last years storms the closing of
highways was not coordinated and lead to different jurisdictions
working against one anothers efforts to control traffic on the
barrier islands. At this time it was agreed to contact the Town
of Ocean Ridge (not present at this meeting), and plan a better
strategy for the next hurricane season.
Upon the submission of lists of key persons for re- entry /clean -up
operations, the Mayor will issue Civil Defense Cards to those persons
listed for this recovery portion of the storm plan. Residents attempt-
ing to re -enter the island will need to have identification, drivers
license etc. to be allowed onto the island from bridge check points.
Residents will not be allowed back until the island is deems safe by
officials.
Steve, the representative from Britt Sewer Services, suggested that
the low pressure private sewer system be voided (pumped down) just
prior to the storm making land fall so as to minimize any back -up
problems with the sewer.
Lt. Woods suggested the town use collapsible barracades to better
control vehicle traffic along AlA
It was also noted that the recent purchase of a generator (in the
event of power failure), would ease the flooding problems in the
