Leesburg, VA (May 11, 2017) – On Tuesday night, the Leesburg Town Council endorsed one of three alternative design concepts presented by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for the proposed interchange at Edwards Ferry Road, Fort Evans Road and the Route 15 Bypass. The Council’s preferred design, “Alternative C”, elevates the Route 15 Bypass over both Edwards Ferry Road and Fort Evans Road and allows pedestrian movements to pass under the bypass without the need for ramps or bridges. The images below show the two sections of the interchange. Following completion of the IJR, VDOT will hold a public hearing on the final design concept in January 2018. VDOT is expected to approve the project’s major design elements in June 2018, after endorsement from both the Leesburg Town Council and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. The total budget for the interchange is $101 million, which includes engineering and design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocations and construction. Currently, the project is funded only to take the project through the IJR with minimal other funding identified. Town officials will be working with VDOT and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority on future funding allocations. Once the project is funded, completion of the interchange is expected to take three to five years. # # #
