Town of Leesburg Officials Complete Certified Planning
Commissioner Program
Leesburg, VA (May 16, 2017) –
Two Leesburg Town Council
Members, two Leesburg Planning
Commissioners and one Leesburg
Economic Development
Commissioner recently completed
the Virginia Certified Planning
Commissioner Program, offered
by the Land Use Education
Program.
The Certified Planning
Commissioners Program provides
participants with a thorough
understanding of the legal background and planning principles that guide local land use
decisions.
Council Member Ron Campbell, Council Member Ken Reid, Planning Commissioner Rick
Lanham, Planning Commissioner JoAnn Walker and Economic Development Commissioner Jim
Sisley (who also on the Loudoun County Planning Commission) began the program in March
and completed it on May 12, 2017. The program began with a two-day classroom session,
followed by self-study assignments, and concluded with a second two-day classroom session.
As part of the self-study assignments, participants are required to visit other Virginia
jurisdiction planning commission meetings in order to gain perspective on the variety of land
use decisions that planning commissions face and how they are handled.
According to Susan Berry-Hill, Leesburg’s Director of Planning and Zoning, newly-appointed
Leesburg Planning Commissioners are expected to complete the program. Town Council
members are encouraged to take the course, but it is not required.
The Land Use Education Program is a partnership of Virginia Tech’s Center for Public
Administration and Policy and the Virginia Cooperative Extension. For more information, visit
