HomeMy Public PortalAbout2009.121 (06-16-09)RESOLUTION NO. 2009.121 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD AUTHORIZING THE OFFER OF $150 SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOURTEEN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT FIREBAUGH HIGH SCHOOL WHEREAS, City Council of the City of Lynwood would like to promote community, charitable and similar activities in Lynwood that yield an appropriate public purpose, consistent with the provisions of the California Constitution, Art. XVI, sec. 6; and WHEREAS, While the City encourages organizers of community, charitable and similar activities in Lynwood to obtain their funding and other support independent of City support, a Donation/Fee Waiver Policy provides a procedure for City support of non-profit entities who participate in and promote events that are beneficial to the community or otherwise provide a valid and substantial public purpose within the mission of the City and demonstrate a need for assistance; and WHEREAS, staff has made a determination that request from Firebaugh High School for scholarship meets most of the criteria set forth in the Donation/Fee Waiver Policy and the other criteria can be rectified by a motion to ensure that the recipients are Lynwood residents and that the school lack the financial resources to meet the requested need; and WHEREAS, the scholarships wiil provide a benefit to the community by providing nominal financial assistance to selected high school students in recognition of their excellent academic performance, favorable representation of the City, and encouragement to other Lynwood young people to excel. NOW, THEREFORE THE MEMBERS OF THE LYNWOOD CITY COUNCIL DOES HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE, ORDER AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: The City Council finds that that offer of scholarships benefit the community. Section 2: The City Council approves the nominal scholarship of $150 per student for fourteen academic athletes recognized by Firebaugh High School contingent upon the applicant meeting the stipulations under the Donation/Fee Waiter Policy. Section 3: The City Council approves that the expenditure of $2,100 will be deducted from the requesting Councilmember's budgeted allocation. Section 4: The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this resolution. PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 16~h day of June 2009. Gt~J ~~ Mari T.
