SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Sister City program is a broad -based, officially approved, long-term partnership between two
communities. Participants in this program engage in a wide diversity of activities, such as cultural exchanges,
information sharing, collaborative projects and involve municipal leaders, as well as members of the business
community, health care, education, civic groups, clubs, etc. The sister cities can define the extent of their
partnership and examples of interaction are: 1) annual "state of the city" letter exchange between mayors;
exchanges of city reports and plans by city officials; exchanges of children's artwork/letters from the public
schools; sharing of newspaper articles; cultural festivals where representatives of the sister city visit, etc.
SCI can assist a city in finding a sister city. Cities are matched based on population size. SCI expects each
sister city to continue its relationship after it is established, and fosters long-term international partnerships
between the cities.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Direct staff to establish a Sister City committee consisting of community representatives to explore the
community's interest in participating in the Sister City program.
