HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL NR 2022-10-28 Douglass High School Exhibit on Display at Thomas Balch Library Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release October 28, 2022 Media Contact: Leah Kosin, Assistant Public Information Officer pio@leesburgva.gov  703-771-2781 Douglass High School Exhibit on Display at Thomas Balch Library Leesburg, VA (October 28, 2022) – The Douglass High School Commemorative Committee is pleased to present, “The History of Douglass High School”, an informative showcase highlighting the school and the struggle black families endured for equal education in Loudoun County. The exhibit displays the black community’s determination, perseverance, and, ultimately, the success of Douglass High School. Open from 1941-1968, Douglass High School closed its doors in the spring of 1968 when integration finally occurred in the County, fourteen years after the landmark Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. Board of Education, which declared that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal and unconstitutional. The exhibit will run through November 30 and is viewable during the library’s operating hours: Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Please note, the library is closed for lunch, from 12 to 1 p.m., on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Their first meeting was held in spring 2021. The committee includes appointees from The Town of Leesburg and the Board of Supervisors with representation from the Loudoun Douglass High School Alumni Association, Loudoun Branch of NAACP, Edwin Washington Society, The Friends of Thomas Balch Library Black History Committee, Loudoun Preservation Society, Loudoun County Heritage Commission, and MLK I have a Dream Committee. # # #
