Two Leesburg Landmarks Recognized in Design Awards
Leesburg, VA (November 16, 2022) – Two Leesburg landmarks are among the winners in the
annual Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Program.
The awards were presented at the November 15, 2022 Board of Supervisors meeting. Peter
Burnett’s 338 Net Zero co-working space on East Market Street was the winner in the
Makeovers category. Burnett’s building has changed uses many times over the years, from a
Tastee-Freez to a locksmith’s shop to the Ampersand food pantry during the COVID-19
pandemic. 338 Net Zero is the county’s first net zero energy consumption building and
embraces the co-working phenomenon with dedicated workspaces for Loudoun’s remote
workers; a conference room; a podcast studio; and a rooftop seating area.
The public plaza at the King Street Station development on South King Street was the winner in
the Public Spaces category. When owner Don Knutson sought to redevelop an old strip center
on South King Street off the W&OD Trail and the Town Branch, he envisioned a more inviting
public space to be an important component of the finished product. The finished product of the
public plaza in the mixed-use development includes a pavilion reminiscent of old monitor barns.
Half of the pavilion’s roof is covered, and the other half has slats that allow natural light to flow
through. Seating and greenspace invite passersby and trail users to gather and enjoy respite,
with plenty of grassy area to accommodate young ones who require a bit more space.
“We are thrilled that 338 Net Zero and the King Street Station Public Plaza were recognized
with these distinguished awards. This recognition only furthers the Town’s position as the Most
Beautiful Town in Virginia,” stated Economic Development Department Director Russell
Seymour.
