Hybrid Class to Highlight African American Genealogy
Leesburg, VA (January 20, 2023) – Steve Hammond and Lori Kimball will teach “Researching
African American Genealogy” on Thursday, February 2, beginning at 10 a.m. The class will be
held in-person and virtually.
In the two-hour class, Hammond and Kimball will be using case studies and examples from their
research. Hammond will share his efforts to make the field more relatable and relevant to the
public at large, particularly as interest in and access to DNA/ancestry/genealogy data becomes
more available. Kimball will discuss resources available at Thomas Balch Library, the Loudoun
County Courthouse, and use of online resources.
This class will take place in the lower-level meeting room at Thomas Balch Library, 208 W
Market Street, in Leesburg. Pre-registration is required. Please call 703-737-7195, email

Steve Hammond is a 7th generation member of the Syphax family of Washington, DC; a line
moved by force to New Orleans and then by choice to Denver.
Lori Kimball works in the Historic Records Division at the Loudoun County Courthouse, is a
member of the Black History Committee of Friends of the Thomas Balch Library, co-researcher
of the Enslaved Community of President James Monroe, and researcher of the enslaved
community at Oatlands.
