V. Trail Study
Park Commissioners began reviewing the 2010-2030 comprehensive plan trail map to
update the 2003 Trail Study by evaluating trail priorities and locations.
Apache Turf Trails: These trails will head east toward Pioneer Trail and South to Hamel
Road. It will be classified as a low priority turf trail.
Foxtail Trails: The Foxtail trails will run from Foxberry Farms to Medina Lake and
continue along a different path to Arrowhead drive. These trails will be driven by
development and will be classified as moderately high priority.
Shawnee Woods Trails: The Shawnee Woods Trails will make a right-angle connection
going directly south from Hackamore along Wild Meadows down to Shawnee Woods
Road, which will then head west along Shawnee Woods Road to County Road 116. This
trail will also be driven by development and will be classified as moderately high
priority.
Navajo East of Hunter to Brockton: There was discussion on why this trail was
labeled on the trail map and its relevance since there is an east west trail proposed just
north of this one running through the Holasek property to connect Hunter Lions Park to

Hamel Legion Park. Galen Bruer recommended removing the trail from the map. Bob
Pastor and Ben Benson both agreed that the trail should be left on the map as a low
priority.
A motion was made by Galen Bruer and seconded by Gerry Dykhoff to remove the trail
from the trail study and comprehensive plan trail map. Motion passed 3-2. Bruer,
Dykhoff, and Linck voted in favor of and Benson and Pastor against.
Meadowwoods Trail: This trail would run along Cherokee Road and Meadowwoods
Trail to connect Deerhill Road to Pinto Drive. This trail will be a low priority.
Deerhill East: Deerhill East will run along Deerhill from Tamarack over to Wolsfeld
Woods. This will be a low priority trail.
Wolsfeld Cabin Trail: This trail was named Wolsfeld Cabin Trail because it describes
the connection of Wolsfeld Cabin which is located at City Hall to Wolsfeld Woods. It
will be a low priority trail.
Wolsfeld West Trail: This trail will connect Willow Drive to Wolsfeld Woods. It should
be a turf trail and classified as low priority.
Alpine Willow Trail: This trail will help make a loop connection that would stay east
of Homestead and would run west from Willow, along Deerhill, then through Seelands ,
connecting with the Reimer and Chestnut Hill, LLC parcels going east through the
Steiner parcel back to Willow. It should be classified as low priority.
West Deer Hill Trails: This will combine both trails running west of Willow to Baker
Park; one is along Deer Hill and the other one heads northwest through the Seeland
property. These trails will be moved to low priority depending on development. Portions
of these trails may be paved and portions will be turf trails.
Willow from Hamel to County Road 24: This trail is currently a gravel trail on a wide
shoulder. It should be changed to existing and kept as gravel.
Chestnut Morgan Road Connection: This trail would run east along Chestnut from
Willow and then head south to connect to Morgan Road. It should be classified as low
priority.
Bruer suggested creating a new trail map that is color coordinated according to trail
priority levels. One color should also show existing trails.
The trail running through the west side of Morningside and heading south to Orono was
also revisited. It was mentioned that the City of Orono has no plans to create a trail
through Orono that would connect on the West side of Medina Morningside. There was a

lot more interest to connect a trail along Willow. The Park Commission recommended
moving the Medina Morningside west side connection from a high priority to a low
priority.
VI. Comprehensive Plan Update
Wunsch updated the Park Commission that Ann Thies had presented the Park
Commission's recommended park and trail changes to the Planning Commission at the
Comprehensive Plan public hearing on December 11, 2007.
VII. Staff Report
a) Park Commission Recruitment — Medina resident Beth Nielsen was present at
the meeting to introduce herself and express her interest in serving on the Medina
Park Commission. The Park Commission asked her a few questions about her
background and then recommended her to the Medina Park Commission.
A motion was made by Ben Benson, seconded by Gerry Dykhoff to recommend to
the City Council the appointment of Beth Nielson to the Park Commission. Motion
passed unanimously.
b) Hamel Legion Park Improvements — Bruer brought in additional examples of
fountain ideas for Hamel Legion Park. These fountain examples were of bronze
birds. There was discussion if a statue of a bird or children was more fitting for
this park. Since the park is an active park, it was decided that children playing
was more fitting. There was a general consensus that the park commission liked
the quality of these fountains and wanted it to have a pioneer feel such as the
fountain with the children climbing up a rock. Bruer will continue researching the
cost and get more specific information on that fountain.
c) Park Commission Training & Orientation Manual— There was a short
discussion on updating the Park Commission Training & Orientation Manual.
Wunsch suggested adding a clause that states that the Council has the right to
terminate a term. The policy on conflict of interest was also discussed. No
changes were recommended on the conflict of interest.
d) 2008 Park Commission Representation at Council Meetings — Ben Benson
volunteered to attend the January 15, 2008 Council meeting. A roster for the rest
of the year will be created and available for review at the January 16th Park
Commission meeting.
VIII. Adjournment
A motion was made by Ben Benson, seconded by Bob Pastor and passed unanimously to adjourn
the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
