RE
MEDINA ROAD PAVING PROGRAM
December 16, 1986
1. A recreational trail shall be part of each paved road
as far as is practicable, useful and economic. No
motorized vehicles shall be allowed on the recreational
trail.
2. Pavement width shall be not more than 22 feet. Normal
shoulders are 2 1/2 feet on each side for a total of 5 feet
of shoulder. On roads with recreational trails the
shoulder width shall total not less than the standard 5
feet, but shall be not less than 3 feet on the trail
side and 2 feet on the opposite side.
3. The recreational trail adjacent to the pavement shall
be not less than 4-6 feet wide. The trail shall only
be placed where it is economically practicable to place
it.
4. The opposite side shoulder may be as narrow as 2 feet.
5. The 22 foot pavement section shall be offset on an
existing gravel road base such that the recreational
trail is on the existing gravel base and not on fill
insofar as is practicable.
6. The recreational trail should be on the side opposite
from the side on which the mailboxes are placed.
Mailbox placement is mandated by the U.S. Postal Service.
7. Where possible, the recreational trail should be on the
same side of the road as the road extends from one
section to the next so the trails line up properly.
Trails should be planned to link up throughout the
relevant trail areas.
8. On new and existing paved roads, the recreational trail
should be further improved where possible and economic
by appropriate striping including the placement of fog
stripes and/or other indicators.
9. The Medina road budget shall pay for normal shoulder
work defined as 5 feet of shoulder (3 feet on the trail
side and 2 feet on the opposite side); the Medina park
fund shall pay for extra costs associated with the
recreational trail including, but not limited to, the
extra width from 3 feet to the minimum 4-6 feet of the
trail, specialized surfacing as needed, and other extra
costs as specified above.
