Chairperson Wood was not scheduled to be at the September Veterans Affairs Council meeting but he was able to make it after all. Chairperson Wood discussed his recent trip to Branson, Missouri and the Ships to Reefs Program. This program provides an economically beneficial and environmentally responsible way to dispose of ships that are no longer in use. The ship he was on is a candidate for this program that sinks ships to create artificial reefs in the oceans. The ships must first be cleaned and prepared for sinking and this process costs anywhere from z to 6.5 million dollars to accomplish. There are four ships in the San Francisco Bay that are leaking oil. There are three aircraft carriers in Washington State that are currently scheduled to be destroyed. A super carrier on the east coast will take the ships out to sea and sink them, if not, a company will be paid to dispose of them. Dismantlers want the Government to pay them to dismantle the ships. He took one side trip to the Softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. VIII. PUBLIC ORALS: None IX.
