New Playground Revealed at Foxridge Park
Leesburg, VA (October 24, 2018) – Mayor
Kelly Burk and Town officials gathered for a
ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday,
October 22, 2018, to celebrate a new
universal design playground at Foxridge Park.
The old equipment has been replaced with
new structures that incorporate inclusive
playground design principles for ages 2
through 12.
In June, the Town of Leesburg received a
$25,000 grant from GameTime, in
partnership with the Virginia Recreation and
Park Society, to upgrade the playground
equipment. Improved drainage, engineered wood fiber ground cover, and installation of a new
concrete ramp into the play area were also incorporated. The existing swing set has remained
the same.
“The new playground was designed to be inclusive. The components accommodate people of
all abilities and challenges them at their own developmental levels,” said Parks and Recreation
Manager Jon Cleaves, adding it was important to offer new components that provide different
levels of challenges for activities.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for lots of different children to come out and play ,” said Mayor
Kelly Burk. “Children with disabilities and children with other issues can come and enjoy the
outdoors, the park and play with their friends. It’s inclusive and really a cool place to hang out.”
Foxridge Park now serves as a national demonstration site for promoting physical activity,
nature engagement, and inclusion. The transformation took about one month to complete. This
upgrade is the third facelift to take place since the park first opened in the early 1980s.
