RESOLUTION NO. 01 -4054
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE
CITY ADOPTING A VETERANS PREFERENCE HIRING POLICY
WHEREAS, the California state legislature passed SB 36 (Baca) 1999, amending Section 50088
of the State's Government Code; and
WHEREAS, SB 36 requires local agencies to adopt a hiring policy that gives veterans preference
over identically qualified applicants or to pass a resolution by January 1, 2002, stating why it is opposed
to such a policy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Temple City desires to hire the most qualified person available for any
given job opportunity with the City; and
WHEREAS, in compliance with SB 36, the City of Temple City hereby adopts a hiring policy that
gives a preference to veterans over otherwise equally qualified applicants for any given job opportunity;
and
WHEREAS, a "veteran" is defined according to the State of California Government Code,
Section 18973 as "any person who has served full time for 30 days or more in the armed forces in time of
war or in time of peace in a campaign or expedition for service in which a medal has been authorized by
the government of the United States, or during the period September 16, 1940, to January 31, 1955, or
who has served at least 181 consecutive days since January 31, 1955, and who has been discharged or
released under conditions other than dishonorable, but does not include any person who served only in
auxiliary or reserve components of the armed forces whose service therein did not exempt him or her
from the operation of the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. "; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TEMPLE
CITY, AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City of Temple City hereby adopts a hiring policy giving preference to veterans
over otherwise equally qualified applicants for any given job opportunity with the City.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution.

4th day of December, 2001, by the following vote:
