HomeMy Public PortalAboutAB 18-105 STEM Grant for LibraryMcCALL CITY COUNCIL 216 East Park Street AGENDA BILL McCall, Idaho 83638 Number AB 18-105 Meeting Date April 26, 2018 AGENDA ITEM INFORMATION  SUBJECT: Request to approve submittal of a Rural Community STEM Engagement Grant for the McCall Public Library Department Approvals Initials Originator or Supporter   Mayor / Council     City Manager /    Clerk     Treasurer     Community Development     Police Department     Public Works     Golf Course    COST IMPACT: $10,000 ($5,000 to be sub-granted) Parks and Recreation    FUNDING SOURCE: Idaho STEM Action Center; no cash match required Airport      Library / Supporter  TIMELINE: Grant is due April 30, 2018 Information Systems      Grant Coordinator  Originator  SUMMARY STATEMENT: The McCall Public Library would like to submit an application for a Rural Community STEM Engagement Grant from the Foundation of the Idaho STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Action Center, an agency enabled by Idaho Legislature (2015/2016) and dedicated to address Idaho’s workforce needs from “from kindergarten through career.” For more information, visit www.STEM.idaho.gov. The grant, if awarded, provides $10,000 to be utilized as follows: $1,500 to support a two-day workshop with visiting facilitators (including costs for food, supplies, copies, marketing etc.) to help participants identify ways to integrate an educational approach within their programs that centers on discovery, experimentation and design (Making). The workshop will likely be held Fall, 2018. $3,500 to purchase new STEM equipment for the McCall Public Library or to contribute to a Maker space within the new Library facility; and $5,000 to distribute to partner organizations ($1,000/each up to five) that participate in the workshop and complete a making-based STEM activity at their site. Potential partners include the Donnelly Public Library, Cultural Arts Center in Cascade, Cascade Public Library, McCall-Donnelly School District, Payette Lakes Community Association, and/or McCall Girl Scouts. The grant does not require a cash match, but will require in-kind project coordination by McCall Public Library staff.  RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve submittal of a Rural Community STEM Engagement Grant and authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary documents.  RECORD OF COUNCIL ACTION  MEETING DATE ACTION
