HomeMy Public PortalAboutJuly 12 2022 Regular Meeting July 12, 2022 To: Board of Park Commissioners, City of Greencastle Fr: Greg Ruark, Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Greencastle Re: Director's Report Please excuse my absence due to a necessary trip to Wisconsin to visit family. The summer is flying by and we have been busy throughout the last four weeks or so.The aquatic center remains busy with excellent attendance figures on most days. The weather certainly has contributed to these numbers. For a while I felt we were cutting grass, getting caught up, and then starting the grass cutting process all over again. Now, it seems to be just the opposite;the grass has stopped growing. It has allowed us to get caught up in other areas. The Greencastle Civic League has been hosting Parkfest each Tuesday at the bandshell in Robe Ann Park. It's a fantastic place to listen to music, as most of you already know. I encourage you to join us if you can. Last weekend was spectacular. Saturday, the pickleball organization hosted their annual tournament in Robe Ann Park. Forty-eight teams participated. On Saturday, and thanks to a gift from the Ballard family we were able to dedicate the Ballard Family Park on the east side of town and adjacent to the People Pathways. This will be a great addition to the park system. Sunday, we began the process of preparing Robe Ann Park for the Celebrate 4 festivities. Thanks to DePauw University we were able to utilize its portable fencing system to cordon off the area in which the fireworks would be launched. This system helped us keep all visitors to the park safe and secure all afternoon and evening. Our vendor, Mortonville Fireworks, was thrilled with the security measures we installed this year. And this allows me to personally thank the Greencastle Police Department, the Greencastle Fire Department, EMS, and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department for their assistance and presence throughout the Celebrate 4 event. It is greatly appreciated. Police Chief Tom Sutherlin and his staff also made sure our Rokicki 5K runners and walkers safely navigated the 3.1 mile course during the 29th Annual Mike Rokicki Memorial Run/Walk Monday. Police Boot Camp is ongoing this week. Servicio from DePauw University is re-stocking the playground with mulch today and tomorrow. On behalf of Greencastle Parks and Recreation, please accept my sincere appreciation for your continued support.
