RESOLUTION NO. 74- , CONCERNING THE HENNEPIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S PATROL
WHEREAS the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners has adopted a
budget which contemplates a reduction of approximately nine patrol
positions in the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department; and
WHEREAS one reason given for the reduction is a desire not to take
up slack caused by cuts in local police budgets; and
WHEREAS the City of Medina has established an excellent working re-
lationship with the Sheriff's patrol division in which Medina police
and Sheriff's officers have cooperated in answering emergency calls,
many of them outside the City of Medina; and
WHEREAS it is often necessary for more than one officer to respond
to an accident or a suspected break-in or other call; and
WHEREAS the City of Medina has budgeted an increase of more than 12
percent in its police budget for 1975 in order to provide police pro-
tection to the fullest extent feasible, including service by three full-
time officers in a community of approximately 2,900 population `includ-
ing the adjoining City of Loretto); and
WHEREAS many areas of Hennepin County are rural in nature, have
fever than 100 persons per square mile and are ill-equipped to support
24-hour-a-day police service; and
WHEREAS sheriffs' departments throughout the country traditionally
Patrol such rural areas; and
WHEREAS reduction of such patrolling by the Hennepin County Sheriff's
Department will materially slow response time and endanger the safety
of county residents and travelers from both urban and rural areas who
use county, state, and municipal roads in rural Hennepin County; and
WHEREAS the City of Medina believes it is poor public policy to
reduce public services that protect safety and lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Medina does hereby urgently request that the Hennepin County Board of
Commissioners make provisions to maintain, at the very least, the cur-
rent strength of the Sheriff's patrol; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVER that the Medina City Council respectfully
observes that, given a choice, the City would prefer to see citizens of
the county served by two additional Sheriff's patrol cars rather than
the two additional county commissioners planned for 1977.
Approved by the Medina City Council this 3,d day of December, 1974.
