6:38 PM Meeting called to order and quorum determined
April minutes reviewed and accepted with one correction to a date on page 2.
Town meeting report – additional hours for Jean and marijuana moratorium passed,
sponsored by Town Manager (can’t sell marijuana in Hopkinton)
Music Fest a success: 8th grade with Evren Gunduz MC in HMS caf as in the past,
talked about beFree and flyers handed out as kids were leaving. 22 kids performed.
Youth Services report: Alison Murphy will help with middle school youth next year.
Jean Vazza reported that April/May programs well received. Good visibility opportunity
on HCAM, training on new laws regarding treatment of minors, and risky behavior data
from survey showed improvement in student choices. Community survey options were
checked into, but very costly.
Kelly Grill reported that her ArtSpace offering to youth after school has been well-
received, and is looking for us to be a source of funding. Committee members suggested
HEF, HPTA, Hopkinton Country Club Charitable Foundation, or making it a summer
activity by connecting to Parks and Rec. Dan Terry offered to register it through P and R
and will bring that to his committee. beFree coffeehouse has a connection to ArtSpace.
Jean debriefed 2013 Youth Commission goals and then discussed 2014 goals focusing
forward to anticipated programs and past successes, then described her priorities.
Dan Terry asked Jean how we could support her through the Youth Commission.
Taru is hoping Norman Khumalo will be able to explain how Youth Services works in
relation to Youth Commission at a future meeting. (We know it is part of our goals)
Jean Bertschmann asked whether we still need liasons, since they no longer vote.
Discussion followed with Taru pointing out that Jean can contact those departments
directly, but general consensus was that we would like to keep those liasons.
A suggestion was made to switch the meeting night, so no conflict with BoS meetings/
Action item: Margie will write an article encouraging new members to submit letters of
interest in HYC membership, to be published in all possible media outlets.
Respectfully Submitted, Margie Wiggin, Hopkinton Youth Commission Secretary
