Report November 2003 Calls for Service The Greencastle Police Dept. had a total of 517 calls for service for the month of November 2003. This puts us at 5,654 calls for service through the month of November 2003. In 2002 we had 5,807 calls for service through the month of November. Community On Nov. 7t'', Chief Tom Sutherlin conducted a safety talk at the Putnam County Library with a home school group. The topics that were discussed included bicycle safety, don't talk to strangers, don't play with guns, and of course the many gadgets that police officers carry on their gun belt. On Nov. 11t', Chief Tom Sutherlin participated in the National Reading Day at Reelsville Elementary. I was asked to read a book to Mrs. Bowers 3rd grade class. On Nov. 13t'', Officers Kristi Mason and Sam Sellers talked with several 6th grade classes at the Greencastle Middle School. Ms. Traub had contacted the police dept. requesting an officer to come and speak with her 6th grade students on drugs and there effects on the body. On Nov. 27th, Officers Gary Stockall, Brian Hopkins, Ed Wilson, Chris Jones, Randy Seigel and myself cooked and delivered thanksgiving dinners to people who were shut in and had no place to go for Thanksgiving. Also assisting with this event were our spouses and children. We were able to deliver approx. 28 meals to different families within our own community. This event was a great success and we hope to help more families next year. The food was donated by Wal-Mart and Krogers. The plates were donated by KFC. The Putnam County Senior Center helped with getting the families that were assisted. Training On November 6th, eight officers from the Greencastle Police Dept. spent a day training and qualifying with the new DPMS AR15 rifles that have been purchased for the police dept. The training was conducted by Jerrod Baugh and Jim Baugh who are both certified firearms instructors through the State of Indiana. The eight officers are now carrying them as police issued equipment. On November 17t`', officers Brian Hopkins, Gary Stockall, and Charles Inman met with a representative from Stop Tech. These three officers received training on how to properly deploy the stop sticks that have been recently purchased for the dept. Officers Stockall and Hopkins can in return then train the rest of the dept. The stop sticks will be used to help safely stop vehicles that are fleeing from Law Enforcement Officers. Building The Board of Works has decided to table the resurfacing of the parking lot at the police dept. The insulation quote was given to Daniel and Barton. I have signed the contract and I'm waiting for their people install the insulation. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I'm looking forward to the New Year. Respectively, Tom Sutherlin Chief of Police
