HOPKINTON DESIGN REVIEW BOARD
MEETING MINUTES
Wednesday, October 2, 2013 7:00 PM
Town Hall, 18 Main St., Hopkinton, MA

1. 68 Elm Street – Sign Permit Application Review – PerkinElmer
Scott Spaulding, ViewPoint Sign and Awning, and Ron Ekstrom, PerkinElmer, appeared before
the Board. Mr. Spaulding described the proposed standing sign for the corner of Parkwood Dr.
and Elm St., noting it would replace the existing sign in that location. He stated the change is
proposed because of the change in company name, and added that the sign will be a little taller
but not as wide. It was noted that the sign would be 32 sq. ft. in area and would sit on a new
base that is the same height as the existing base. Mr. Spaulding noted that the letters would be
backlit, “halo” LED lighting. Ms. Thomson noted that the “P” logo seems lost in the large space.
Mr. Spaulding agreed, but it is the corporate logo and the company has insisted that there can be
no changes to it on the sign. He stated he looked at changing the proportions and size, but letters
less than 8” high can’t be fabricated and the proportions of the logo can’t be changed. Mr.
Doherty asked about the background color, and it was stated that it will be brushed stainless
steel.
The Board voted unanimously to accept the design as presented and to make no
recommendations for change.
2. Meeting Schedule
After discussion, the Board decided to meet on the third Tuesday of every month. The Board
decided it would need to meet on an additional date in October (either 10/15 or 10/22) to
formulate specific recommendations to the Zoning Advisory Committee on signs and lighting in
advance of a public forum on 10/28.
