Town of Newbury
Newbury, MA
Condition on Receipt: The full reverse calf stationery case binding was dirty
and wom, particularly at the corners and edges. A metal spine liner was
apparent where there were leather losses at the endcaps and joints. Parts of
the leather were lifting. A typescript paper label was adhered to the spine
with pressure -sensitive tape which extended onto the boards. The joints and
internal hinges were partially broken. The text block consisted of ruled leaves
with text in manuscript inks. The pages had been trimmed and some text was
lost. Most of the pages were dirty, discolored, and acidic. Many were foxed.
The exterior leaves and pastedowns were particularly discolored from the
leather turn -ins. Some of the pages had a few small tears. An enclosure was
adhered to the back pastedown; the paper was very discolored and the inks
were fractured. Some of the manuscript inks present were faint or smeared.
Treatment Report: The pH was recorded before and after treatment: Before
4.0, After 9.0. The inks were tested for solubility. The head, tail, and pages
were dry cleaned and nonaqueously buffered (deacidified) with a suspension
of magnesium oxide particles in a perfluoro compound. Tears were mended
and folds guarded where necessary with Japanese paper and wheat starch
paste. The tape was removed mechanically. Internal hinges were repaired
using Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste. Loose leather on the binding
was reattached. The volume was housed in a drop -spine box.
