pad, which excluded the decorative feature. Subsequently, on February 5, 2013,
Council awarded a contract for the concrete work , completed later that month.
5. Councilmember Vizcarra recently requested an item be placed on the December
16, 2014 Council agenda to finalize direction on the dance floor's decorative
feature.
ANALYSIS:
Over the past few years, staff has explored various decorative elements for the dance
floor, including designs inspired by the City logo and camellia etchings along Rosemead
Boulevard. Nevertheless, the most feasible, achievable and cost-effective design was
that provided originally of a patterned and literal camellia motif (Attachment "A"). This
was confirmed after consultation with the City's contractor to perform this type of work
on an existing concrete slab.
Should Council wish to pursue this design, it is recommended that the associated series
of quotes be removed from the scope, as the specified lettering sizes are too small for
sandblasting. Furthermore, the installation of quotes could prove difficult since its
placement may conflict with existing concrete score lines and stress cracks.
CONCLUSION:
Council is requested to approve an original design for the Pavilion's expanded dance
floor. If approved, staff will immed iate ly procure sandblasting services to execute the
design as closely as possible. Alternately, Council may request not to pursue the project
or consider subsequent review of other design options.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The adopted FY 2014 -15 City Budget does not contain funding to execute the decorative
feature. Staff recommends a $10,000 allocation from the unass ig ned General Fund
balance to cover installation costs.
