PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS: In April, 2010 the Arsenal Center for the Arts invited Watertown and Belmont
artists to exhibit their work in the first annual Watertown (& Belmont) Open Studios event;
and
WHEREAS: The event was well attended by Watertown residents and many residents were
introduced to the wealth of local artists working out of their homes or community studio spaces
such as the Turtle Art Studios and the Arsenal Center for the Arts; and
WHEREAS: A group of Watertown artists formed the Watertown Open Studio Committee in
September 2010 to plan the second annual Watertown Open Studios event for October, 2011;
and
WHEREAS: The Watertown Open Studio Committee received a grant from the Watertown
Cultural Council, as well as entry fees from approximately 50 Watertown artists who have
registered to exhibit in the Watertown Open Studios event; and
WHEREAS: The Watertown Open Studio Committee contacted art teachers at Watertown
High School to invite students in classes 2012 & 2013 to exhibit their work at the event; and
WHEREAS: Many neighboring communities (e.g. Cambridge, Somerville, Newton) hold
annual Open Studio events supported by the town government, local businesses and residents:
and
WHEREAS: Watertown Open Studies will celebrate Watertown's arts community, as well as
offer residents an opportunity to view the work of their neighbors and friends;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT Proclaimed: That the Town Council of the City known as the
Town of Watertown hereby establish Saturday, October 1, 2011 — Sunday, October 2, 2011 as
Watertown Open Studios Weekend.
