A Resolution Declaring a Local Water Conservation Order
WHEREAS, the City of Greencastle and surrounding area is currently experiencing
historic weather conditions and extreme drought;
WHEREAS, the lack of rainfall has the potential of creating water shortages for the city
and its customers;
WHEREAS, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Indiana
Homeland Security have declared the current condition in Putnam County to be at
warning level with the stated objective that citizens reduce their water use by ten to
fifteen (10 to 15) percent;
WHEREAS, although the City currently has an adequate supply of water in its aquifer,
the potential exists for future shortages if the current drought conditions prevail; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor issued Executive Order 2012 -01, declaring a temporary water
conservation order.
NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, by the Common Council of the City of
Greencastle that it hereby declares a Local Water Conservation Order. The Order creates
a voluntary water conservation program in order to protect life and property from real and
potential loss. All citizens are asked to reduce their water use to essential needs only, and
to discontinue using water for non - essential needs.
Citizens are asked to conserve water by whatever means appropriate, including but not
limited to:
1. Finding and repairing any water leaks in their home or business,
2. Discontinuing the washing of vehicles and considering the use of commercial car
washes that recycle water,
3 Discontinuing the watering of lawns,
4 Reducing the amount of water used on athletic fields,
5. Running appliances such as clothes and dish washers with full loads only,
6. Discontinuing the use of ornamental or recreational water features and toys that
require a constant stream of water,
7. Discontinuing washing of sidewalks and driveways, and
8. Reusing water (non - drinking purposes) whenever possible.
Citizens should continue to ensure, however, that they use water whenever needed for
personal hydration and cooling purposes to ensure their own healthy well- being,
especially for children and the elderly.
This Resolution shall have full force and effect upon passage of the Greencastle Common
Council and its approval by the Mayor. The Council hereby grants the Mayor the
authority to terminate this Order when the drought and extreme weather conditions have
ceased and the City's aquifer is at a healthy and safe level.
