Hayward, Preservation Agent J Date: April 12, 2013 Re: 917 Belmont Street Watertown Historic Landmark Determination This memo is to request the designation of 917 Belmont Street as a Watertown Historic Landmark under the provision of the Watertown Historic Landmarks Ordinance, 0-2010-2 be brought before the Town Council for consideration and adoption. The Historical Commission at its April 11, 2013 meeting voted unanimously to recommend the adoption of 917 Belmont Street as a Watertown Historic Landmark. Built in 1832, 917 Belmont Street is recognized for its near intact Greek Revival architectural style and the historic contributions by its residents during the American Revolution, pre-Civil War, the arts and education movements. As part of the Ordinance, the Walker Home and School, the present owner, initiated the request for consideration to the Historical Commission(see attached Petition for Historic Landmark Designation) on March 14, 2013. The request was followed by thorough research on the property, resulting in the Landmark Designation Report, Abijah White House, 917 Behnont Street by David Russo, Chair of the Historical Commission (see attached). As required by the Ordinance, a copy of the application and the Designation Report is filed and presented to the Watertown Planning Board and Zoning Officer for their information. The criterion for designating a property as a Watertown Historic Landmark must be based on its association with a historic person or event, and its architectural significance—917 Belmont Street meets this selective criterion. In addition, the designation of 917 Belmont Street as a Watertown Historic Landmark will meet the purpose of the ordinance which is to preserve the heritage of the City by identifying and protecting sites and structures as well as foster public appreciation and awareness of the Town's history. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact David Russo or me at chavward(cD,watertown-ma.eov or(617) 972-6426.
