Lawn, Jr., District D Councilor Watertown Town Council Administration Building 149 Main Street Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 617-972-6470 RESOLUTION # R -2011- A Resolution Designating the Building Located at 77 Riverside Street As a Watertown Historic Landmark WHEREAS, in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance 0-2010-2, the Watertown Historic Landmarks Ordinance, the Town may designate sites and structures which constitute or reflect important elements of the architectural, cultural, aesthetic, political, economic or social history of the Town to be historic landmarks; and WHEREAS, the building located at 77 Riverside Street is one of the four oldest houses in the Town, having been built circa 1806; and WHEREAS, the building located at 77 Riverside Street is a fine example of Federal style architecture; and WHEREAS, the building located at 77 Riverside Street was the birthplace and home of Chief Justice George Tyler Bigelow, who served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1844 - 1876; and WHEREAS, on March 14, 2011, Thomas Mark and Ernesta Kraczkiewcz, owners of the property located at 77 Riverside Street, submitted to the Town's Historical Commission an application for the designation of the building on that property as a Watertown Historic Landmark; and WHEREAS, the Historical Commission at its meeting on September 8, 2011, voted unanimously to recommend the designation of the building located at 77 Riverside Street as a Watertown Historic Landmark, having determined that the building satisfied the very selective criteria of the Ordinance based upon its architectural significance and its association with a historic person, as well its meeting the purpose of the Ordinance to preserve the heritage of the Town by identifying and protecting sites and structures as well as foster public appreciation and awareness of the Town's history; and WHEREAS, the provisions of the Ordinance require that designation of a Watertown Historic Landmark shall be by order of the Town Council. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council of the City known as the Town of Watertown hereby recognizes the architectural, cultural, and aesthetic significance of the building as determined by the Historical Commission and therefore orders the designation of the building located at 77 Riverside Street as a Watertown Historic Landmark. Council Member I hereby certify that at a regular meeting of the Town Council for which a quorum was present, the above resolution was adopted by a vote of for, against and present on October 25, 2011.
