MONDAY, May 9, 2012
IN ATTENDANCE:
DOROTHY MARUSKA, KIM HESSE, LINDA KATZ, JANE ROCHE, JEAN VAZZA, KEN
JOHNSON, MARGIE WIGGIN, PHIL POWERS, KIM HARVEY
The commission discussed, at length, the future of the youth commission. There are a number of members who will be leaving at the end of June. There was some discussion whether there
should be a decrease in the number of members but this would have to go through the Board of
Selectmen.
Jane Roche attended the meeting to review where the beFREE coalition is at. Jane Roche and
Sue Hadley will be leaving the coalition as of June 30. This will be a large roll that needs to be filled. Jean Vazza said she could take over some of the rolls. Michelle Carbonneau will take
over doing High School youth activities for one year and Allison Murphy will take over doing
Middle School youth activities. As of now there are a number of tasks performed by Jane and
Sue that no one has volunteered to help with.
Dorothy Maruska presented an idea of having a youth program in the summer – similar to that run by Westboro. This would be focused toward the kids in town that don’t have the ability to
go away for the summer.The program costs about $4,000 in salary and $2,000 in supplies etc. It
was agreed that Dorothy and Jean would speak with Parks and Rec and the Town Manager to see
if this was a possibility for the town.
