Driscoll, Town Manager Date: October 22, 2010 RE: AGENDA ITEM - APPROVAL OF GIFT EXPENDITURE I am delighted to inform you that Mr. Ronald D. Dean, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer of Watertown Savings Bank has offered to fund the cost of materials for the replacement of the sidewalk on the east side of Cross Street between Main Street and Pleasant Street. As indicated in the attached correspondence from Superintendent Mee along with a follow up conversation, this sidewalk is in need of replacement and Mr. Dean's offer would be beneficial to the community. The work will be performed under the guidance of the Department of Public Works using general construction standards and principals. This sidewalk will also improve the pedestrian connection between the Pleasant Street project and Main Street. The total estimated dollar value for the material is $3,700. Pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 44, Section 53A, any expenditure of gifts of funds needs the approval of the Town Manager and Town Council. I respectfully request the attached Resolution approving this gift expenditure be placed on the October 26, 2010 Town Council Agenda for your consideration. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. cc: Ronald D. Dean, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Watertown Savings Bank Gerald S. Mee, Jr., Superintendent of Public Works Phyllis L. Driscoll, Town Manager FROM: Gerald S. Mee, Jr. Superintendent of Public Works DATE: October 22, 2010 RE: Acceptance of a Gift Mr. Ronald D. Dean, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Watertown Savings Bank has graciously offered to donate funds for the materials to replace the sidewalk on the east side of Cross Street between Main Street and Pleasant Street. The work will be performed by Newport Construction as they have bid sidewalk items under our road contract and they are the low bidder on the Pleasant Street project that abuts this proposed work. Utilizing this contractor, in my mind, is the most logical and cost effective approach to replace the sidewalk in need of repair. The total estimated dollar value for the material is $3,700. Please bear in mind that these are estimated numbers and we respectfully reserve the option to increase or decrease the dollar values based on actual cost upon completion of the work. I would ask that this request be placed before the Town Council as an agenda item at the October 26, 2010 meeting of the Council for consideration of acceptance. Please let me know if you require further information and thank you for your attention to this matter.
