HomeMy Public PortalAboutBrewster School Committee -- 2017-03-16 Minutes U1129 2 AP", Brewster School Committee Thursday, March 16, 2017 PREI} r, TER 1'C4411 i: LRRK Brewster Town Hall Present for the Committee : Jessica Larsen, Dave Telman, Claire Gradone, and Bob Miller Absent for the Committee : Marie Enochty Present for the Administration; Thomas Conrad, Giovanna Venditti, and Principals Joanna Hughes and Denise Fronius Call to Order/Auenda Changes Chair Telman called the meeting to order at 6 : 00 p . m. Stacy Faris and the Grade 2 students opened the meeting with two delightful songs, highlighting the month of March and Music in Our Schools . It was noted the POPS Concert is at 7 : 00 p .m . on Friday, March 17" Chair David Telman announced the retirement of Principal Denise Fronius and recognized her for the great work she has done for the children of Brewster. Principal Fromus thanked the Brewster School Committee for always supporting the schools . Citizens Sneak — none PRIORITY BUSINESS Brewster Whitecaps Mike Gradone, representative of the Brewster Whitecaps, addressed the Committee relative to maintenance of the fields . A letter will be sent home to parents advising them to keep off the field during April vacation. MOTION : On a motion by Jessica Larsen, seconded by Robert Miller, it was voted unanimously (4 yeas) to approve the field maintenance schedule for April vacation . Administrators ' Reports Chair Telman indicated that the Principals ' reports were included in the packet. Mr . Miller stated the Jump Rope for Heart was outstanding. Chair Telman indicated that Keith Gauley' s report was included in the packet and if members had questions, they could email Mr. Gauley. The Superintendent indicated that he just finished negotiating the teachers ' contract. The contract will be forwarded to the language committee . He ' s hopeful that it will be ratified and the School Committees will vote on it on March 23 `a . Chair Telman thanked Jessica Larsen and the Superintendent for a job well done . He attended the National Conference and spent a lot of time looking at programs . He focused on work being done in the West on innovative labs and how they personalize the learning experience with the use of technology for each of the students . He looked at the STEAM programs K42 and the IB program for elementary schools . He thanked the Committee for the opportunity to attend and see what is happening in education on a national level . FY17 Budget Review Giovanna Venditti reviewed the FYI budget for the Stony Brook School noting an ending balance of -$9, 851 . 03 . Ms . Venditti indicated they unencumber money in account #5096, Fuel, as they did not need those funds because of the contract. Account #5048 , Contracted Service Building, expended $2, 846 because capital funds have been exhausted so it must come directly from the operating budget . Ms . Venditti will reword Accounts 5001 and 5002 and bring it to the committee next time . IjPage Brewster school Committee 3 - 16 - 2017 Ms . Venditti reported that a student moved into Brewster who was in residential placement in the prior district. The student is in the Star Program at the Cape Cod Collaborative. $35 , 190 has been encumbered for transportation and therapy costs until the end of the school year. Dr. Caretti will continue to monitor the child ' s progress . Ms . Venditti reported that there is a $33 ,224 . 81 balance in the Eddy School budget. Account #7096, unencumbered funds for fuel . Account 7092, Out of District transportation for the new student expended $ 12, 045 . Account 7049, Contracted Service equipment, expended $4,631 . Ms . Venditti reported that the HVAC warranty expired in September and that wind and snow got into the unit. Mechanical Air indicated units should be running in storms . Mr. Miller suggested Mr. Schofield come up with some design to block them off so this doesn 't happen again . Chair Telman would like an update on the HVAC when Brewster hears from the company. Cape Cod Collaborative expenses are $22, 878 for a new student. The Superintendent indicated that Mr . Schofield is on top of this and will keep them informed . The break in the underground wire was from a snow plow. Ms . Venditti will send specifics . Gifts and Donations Motion . On a motion by Claire Gradone, seconded by Jessica Larsen, it was voted unanimously to accept the gifts and donations in the amount of $ 893 . Public Hearing — School Choice The Superintendent indicated that every school in the state has to declare whether or not they want to participate in the school choice program. At this point, he did not think Brewster would accept any school choice students at the elementary level . Motion : On a motion by Robert Miller, seconded by Claire Gradone, it was voted unanimously not to participate in the school choice program in the 2017-218 school year . Reports and Information Preschool Enrollment — Included in the packet . There were no questions . Cape Cod Collaborative — Jessica Larsen reported that the Collaborative is researching a recovery high school, the new business manager is on board, and the Director of Way Point is retiring. School Councils — Jessica Larsen report that the Community Reading Day was a great event. Robert Miller reported that the Stony Brook School Council is updating and reviewing the School Improvement Plan . They are adding a community involvement piece to the School Improvement Plan. They hope to reach out to senior citizens in the community to see if programs can be enhanced in the Brewster community. Principal FronIII indicated that they would like to create an intergenerational opportunity/partnership with the seniors in the community. PTO — Claire Gradone reported that the PTO did not meet but had a very successful pasta dinner at the Eddy School . Policy Subcommittee — No report. Transportation Subcommittee — Claire Gradone indicated that the Transportation will be meeting the 1St Tuesday in March. Substance Abuse Subcommittee — Jessica Larsen reported that the committee is working on a survey for high school students . The Middle School students are taking the survey that is anonymous and online . The goal is for staff to be sure the students know they are there to help them . District Health and Wellness Subcommittee — No report. 2jPage Brewster School Committee 3 - 16 - 2017 Approval of Minutes On a motion by Robert Miller, seconded by Claire Gradone, it was voted unanimously to approve the minutes of February 16, 2017 , as amended .
