Resolution #22 R-2010-22
Whereas: "Earth Hour," is an annual event where people around the world agree to turn
off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 pm local time as a way to take an action for global
climate change; and,
Whereas: last year, hundreds of millions of people around the globe participated in this
event; and,
Whereas: in 2009, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Empire State Building, the Acropolis in
Athens and St. Peter's in Rome were among the sites that went dark; and,
Whereas: Massachusetts is an official Earth Hour state; and,
Whereas: the Town Council of the city known as the Town of Watertown is committed
to working to mitigate climate change by, for example, creating an Environment and
Energy Efficiency Committee and purchasing fuel efficient vehicles; and,
Whereas: Earth Hour symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a
positive impact on the call for action on climate change, protecting our future and that of
future generations.
Now therefore be it resolved that the Town Council of the city known as the Town of
Watertown instructs the Town Manager to turn off all lights in municipal buildings
between 8:30 and 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 27, excepting those that are essential to
maintaining public safety, and
Be it further resolved that the Town Council of the city known as the Town of
Watertown, Massachusetts urges all of its citizens to turn off all household lights
between 8:30 and 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 27.
