Lawn, Jr., District D Councilor Watertown Town Council Administration Building 149 Main Street Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 617-972-6470 R-2010-32 Resolution in Support of the US Conference of Mayors for a Nuclear Weapons Free Future April 6, 2010 Whereas: The use of nuclear weapons by nuclear powers remains a real possibility and, according to the bipartisan Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, the use of nuclear weapons by terrorists is a real threat to the US and its allies; and Whereas: Former Secretaries of State and Chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are advocating nuclear abolition for the sake of U.S. security, including Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, William Perry, Sam Nunn, Colin Powell, and James Baker; and Whereas: President Obama and Russian President Medvedev have committed their respective countries to achieving a nuclear -free world; and Whereas: In May hundreds of officials, including many heads of state, will meet at the United Nations for the 2010 Review Conference for the Nuclear Non -Proliferation Treaty; and Whereas: The Nuclear Non -Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is a grand bargain: the non- nuclear parties agreed to forgo nuclear weapons, while the nuclear parties agreed to "pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures related to nuclear disarmament"; and Whereas: The United States Conferences of Mayors voted unanimously to call on President Obama "to announce at the 2010 Non -Proliferation Treaty Review Conference the initiation of good faith multilateral negotiations on an international agreement to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020", Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Town Council of the City know as the Town of Watertown adds its voice of support to this unanimous, urgent call of the United States Conference of Mayors, and Be it Further Resolved, that notification of this resolution be sent to President Obama and to our Members of Congress. Council Member I hereby certify that at a regular meeting of the Town Council for which a quorum was present, the above Resolution was adopted by a roll call vote of _for, _against and present on April 13, 2010.
