Resolution in Support of the US Conference of Mayors for a Nuclear Weapons Free
Future April 6, 2010
Whereas: The use of nuclear weapons by nuclear powers remains a real possibility and,
according to the bipartisan Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of
the United States, the use of nuclear weapons by terrorists is a real threat to the US
and its allies; and
Whereas: Former Secretaries of State and Chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are
advocating nuclear abolition for the sake of U.S. security, including Henry Kissinger,
George Shultz, William Perry, Sam Nunn, Colin Powell, and James Baker; and
Whereas: President Obama and Russian President Medvedev have committed their
respective countries to achieving a nuclear -free world; and
Whereas: In May hundreds of officials, including many heads of state, will meet at the
United Nations for the 2010 Review Conference for the Nuclear Non -Proliferation
Treaty; and
Whereas: The Nuclear Non -Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is a grand bargain: the non-
nuclear parties agreed to forgo nuclear weapons, while the nuclear parties agreed to
"pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures related to nuclear
disarmament"; and
Whereas: The United States Conferences of Mayors voted unanimously to call on
President Obama "to announce at the 2010 Non -Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
the initiation of good faith multilateral negotiations on an international agreement to
abolish nuclear weapons by 2020",
Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Town Council of the City know as the Town of
Watertown adds its voice of support to this unanimous, urgent call of the United States
Conference of Mayors, and
Be it Further Resolved, that notification of this resolution be sent to President Obama
and to our Members of Congress.

13, 2010.
