HomeMy Public PortalAboutBrewster School Committee -- 2017-06-15 Minutes Brewster School Committee APPROVED Thursday, June 15, 2017 Brewster Town Hall Present for the Committee : David Telman, Jessica Larsen, Claire Gradone, and Bob Miller Absent for the Committee : Marie Enochty Present for the Administration : Thomas Conrad and Keith Gauley Call to Order -� r CP 5 d1 ; .iF�Ft � Chair Telman called the meeting to order at 6 : 00 p .m. °r ► � i�h i���,,rj cL � F: Citizens Sneak — none PRIORITY BUSINESS Administrators ' Reports Principals ' reports were included in the packet. The Chair asked members to contact the Principals if they had any questions . Mr. Gauley report was included in the packet and there were no questions from committee members . Superintendent Conrad reported that Administration is watching and is aware of the Kindergarten number at Stony Brook which is presently 51 students . Historical data indicates that 5 students may enroll over the summer . The school has aggressively looked for perspective Kindergarten students . The Superintendent reported he has been working with MIT and looking at the possibility of a PreK- 12 curriculum in the area of robotics . He made connections with people at the Lincoln Lab and just learned that the MIT will partner with Nauset this summer for High School students to help build an autonomous car. This will be introduced to elementary schools in the fall . There is a possibility of Professional Development with professors at MIT with staff. This is all in beginning stages but is very exciting for the District. FY17 Budget Review The Expenditure Reports were included in the packet. Ms . Venditti may be reached by email if members of the committee have questions on the reports . The Superintendent distributed the spending plan for Stony Brook noting they will prepay $30, 000 to the Preschool and $25 , 000 to the Cape Cod Collaborative . The Superintendent indicated that the actuals will be sent at the end of the year . He also apprised the Committee about the new Municipal Law that enables the town to establish a fund for a Special Needs Account. This initiative is supported by the Town Administrator. In the future, money will be placed in that account. Meetinu Schedule It was the consensus of the committee to skip a July meeting and have the August meeting at the regularly scheduled time . (August 17, 2017 at 6 : 00 p . m . at the Brewster Town Hall) The Superintendent reported that the Region School Committee is completing an enrollment report for the MSBA . Some member towns wanted the Regional School Committee to take a look at the school choice issue . The board will discuss configurations as requested by some town citizens and will involve elementary school boards if needed . MASC/MASS Jessica Larsen and Claire Gradone would like to register for the conference in November . 1jPage Brewster School Committee6 - 15 - 2017 Reports and Information Preschool Enrollment — Preschool enrollment will be sent to committee members . Cape Cod Collaborative — No report School Councils — No report PTO — No report Policy Subcommittee — No report. Transportation Subcommittee — Claire Gradone indicated that the Transportation Subcommittee has a meeting scheduled for June 27 at 4 : 30 p .m . Substance Abuse Subcommittee — Jessica Larsen indicated the committee is reviewing the High School survey. The Substance Abuse Task Force and the Mental Health Subcommittee may blend together and become one committee . Marie Enochty shared the news of Paul Kehoe being nominated as Elementary Teacher of the Year and invited parents, students and staff to attend the Celebration of Excellence on May 25 "' at 6 : 00 p .m . Approval of Minutes On a motion by Robert Miller, seconded by Claire Gradone, it was voted to approve the minutes of May 18 , 2017 . At this time, Chair Telman recognized Principal Denise Fronius who is retiring from the Stony Brook Elementary School after 12 years of dedicated service . He thanked her for all her tireless work for the kids of Brewster and wished her well in her retirement. Principal Fronius thanked the committee for all their support over the years . She thanked them for putting their support in their Administrators and teachers to make decisions on what is best for the students of Brewster. She welcomed the new Principal Patty Allen .
