DON'T FORGET FLOOD INSURANCE! Federal flood insurance provides coverage to protect homes and belongings from damage caused by rising water. Insurance agents can provide information about policies for homeowners through the National Flood Insurance Program (flood insurance may be obtained only through your insurance agent). Federal officials note that homeowner policies do not include flood coverage. They also note that, "you do not have to live near the water to become a flood victim." Standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover losses due to floods. However, the Town of Gulf Stream is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program. Through the efforts of the Town, the Town of Gulf Stream has obtained a Class 8 rating from the National Flood Insurance Program, which is one of the lowest ratings on the east coast of Florida. This provides a 10 percent reduction in your flood insurance rates. The insurance is available to any owner of insurable property (a building or its contents). Tenants may also insure their personal property against flood loss. The actual cost will vary depending upon the amount of coverage and the degree of flood hazard. We urge persons who live or own property in flood hazard areas to purchase flood insurance to protect themselves from losses due to flooding. This insurance is required in certain instances, such as the purchase of a home with a federally backed mortgage. If a Flood Elevation Certificate for your property is necessary for insurance or mortgage purposes, please contact the Town Hall to see if one is on file for your property. The flood elevation shall only be available if a current survey exists in Town records. If you are having a new survey performed you may request the surveyor provide you with the "Flood Elevation Certificate" along with the new survey. If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the Town Hall, Town of Gulf Stream, 100 Sea Road, Monday through Friday from 9:OOAM to 4:OOPM or call 561- 276-5116. We urge you to obtain as much information as possible about flooding. Disaster Supplies Kit Disasters happen anytime and anywhere. And when disaster strikes, you may not have much time to respond.
