HomeMy Public PortalAboutSpring 1999Town of Gulf Stream Spring 1999 Newsletter Thank you to the AlA Historic Highway Committee During last summer, more than 500 trees and other plant materials were planted in the Town's two - mile AIA right -of -way. The overall design was carefully reviewed and recommended by the Town's Historic Highway Committee and approved by the Department of Transportation. The project, which was fully funded through a federal grant, creates a variety of canopied sections over the roadway, from a dense pine canopy to an open curved palm canopy effect. Although the plants have minimal water and maintenance needs, the project's ultimate success will rely on adjacent residents' voluntary care of these materials, especially during drought conditions. Maintenance guidelines have been prepared by the project landscape architect and these are available at Town Hall. As a next step, the Town will be pursuing the replacement of metal street signs with coquina - finish ground level signs along AIA. The tree supports will be removed in June. The Town Commission greatly appreciates the Historic Highway Committee and the many supportive and interested Town residents who have made this historic project possible. Historic Highway Committee Members Cynthia Neeves, Chairman Jean Breazeale, Vice Chairman Kim Tiernan, Secretary George Kagan Charles Russell Civic Association Generosity At its Annual meeting on March 29, 1999, The Gulf Stream Civic Association, Inc., voted to make a very generous donation of two defibrillators to the Town. The defibrillators will be kept in the police squad cars and all Town Police Officers will receive training in the proper use of these important life saving devices. As such, this equipment will improve response time in the incidence of cardiac arrest. The Town Commission greatly appreciates the generosity of the Civic Association. Flood Insurance Savings... Good News This spring the Town applied for a Community Rating System (CRS) classification in order to reduce our residents' future flood insurance costs. We were recently informed that we qualified for two levels. For each level the Town achieves, residents in Flood Hazard Areas will benefit from 5% increments in flood insurance savings. In order to qualify for enhanced ratings, the Town staff has improved its stormwater maintenance procedures and will be updating Town ordinances pertaining to drainage, in addition to a number of other activities. The rate reductions should be in effect by next year. Flood Zone Information As a public service, the Town of Gulf Stream provides the following information upon request: Whether a property is in or out of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) as shown on the current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of the Town. Additional flood insurance data, such as the FIRM Zone and the base flood elevation or depth, if shown on the FIRM of the Town.
