LYNCH TOWN OF GULF STREAM PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA T6lWhma (561)276-5116 Fm (561) 737.0166 Town Manager KRISTIN KERN GARRISON Tawe Clark RITA L TAYLOR NOTICE OF AlA LANDSCAPE INSTALLATION COMMENCEMENT JUNE 1998 As announced in the last several Town newsletters and in notices mailed to North Ocean Boulevard homeowners, an important landscape enhancement project is underway for the AlA Historic Highway (the full two miles within Town limits). All Planting will occur in the road right-of-way. Design Objectives The plans, which were carefully reviewed and recommended by the Town's Historic Highway Committee and approved by the Department of Transportation, seek to restore the historic canopy over the roadway. The plans have also been designed to protect the health of the existing pine trees by removing sod from around the base of the tree trunks (fertilizer used on grass and weed cutters are harmful to the trees). New trees that also produce a canopy — such as Ligustrum, Gumbo Limbo and curved Palms — will also be introduced. The scenic drive through this stretch of AlA is part of the Town's legacy; this project seeks to protect and enhance this asset Scheduling and What to Expect • During the month of June, tree layout and planting will occur. If you see flags (designating water and gas lines, and tree placement) alongside AlA, please take care not to disturb them, as it will disrupt the planting layout and could lead to inadvertent breakage of utility lines. • Due to the narrow nature of the road, traffic will be maintained by flag holders hired by the landscape contractor. • No lane blockage is permitted during peak traffic hours of 7 to 9 AM and from 4 to 6 PM, so the greatest delays are to be expected from 9 AM to 4 PM. • In order to finish the project as quickly as possible, some work will be permitted after 5 PM, but no later than sunset. Please make Town Hall aware of any noise problems you experience. • Some overnight storage of the contractor's equipment may occur (on Town property or in the parking area of the Golf Stream Gulf Club), but for a limited period of time. OOAOO NOTICE, Page 2 • Any irrigation lines or utility lines accidentally disturbed during planting will be immediately repaired by the contractor or utility representative. • Please note that the natural gas company (Florida Public Utilities) will be installing new gas lines during the coming weeks, as well. The new main line will run along the east side of AlA, from the south side of the Gulf Stream Golf Club clubhouse to the north side of Westminster, and FPU will be responsible for its own project • After the planting in June, watering by trucks will occur for a 90 day period. At first, watering must be done every day (including Sundays) to ensure the plants' initial adjustment After two weeks, the watering will taper off. Long- Term Maintenance • Following the watering period, it is hoped that existing irrigation systems in front of residents properties will address the plants' future water needs. The plants were carefully chosen to minimize their need for water. • Maintenance guidelines have been prepared by the project landscape architect These were handed out at a meeting held for all registered landscape maintenance professionals in Town, and are available at Town Hall. The project's ultimate success depends greatly on residents' voluntary care of these materials. In closing, THANK YOU to the Historic Highway Committee and to the many supportive and interested Town residents who have made this historic project possible. If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding the project, please contact Town Hall at (561) 276-5116
