HomeMy Public PortalAboutFire & Safety Checklist HOME FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION CHECKLIST A fire can occur in any part of your home. Use this checklist to perform a safety check of your home, and work to correct any items noted HOME EXTERIOR COOKING ____ Ensure house number is visible from street ____ Never leave cooking unattended ____ Have trees trimmed away from electrical lines ____ Turn pot handles inward to avoid burn injuries ____ Keep barbeque grills away from the house when in use ____ Never store combustibles in oven or stove top ____ Always empty charcoal ashes into metal container ____ Roll up sleeves while using the stove or oven FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS & HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ELECTRICAL ____ Limit the amount of chemicals stored in your home ____ Avoid overloading electrical circuits ____ Dispose of and recycle hazardous materials properly ____ Inspect electrical cords & appliances for damage ____ Store chemicals in original containers, clearly marked ____ Do not tack cords to wall, or run under rugs ____ Store hazardous materials away from heat sources ____ Avoid using extension cords, have more outlets ____ Allow proper ventilation when using chemicals indoors installed by a professional electrician ____ Oil or chemical soaked rags stored in metal container ____ Install GFCI outlets in potentially damp locations With a tight fitting lid to prevent spontaneous ignition FIRE EXTINGUISHERS SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS ____ Purchase multi-purpose (ABC) fire extinguishers ____ Install smoke alarms in and outside bedrooms, ____ Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen, basement, and on every level of your home and/or garage area of your home ____ Install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm on each ____ Teach family members to properly use fire extinguishers level of your home (P.A.S.S.—Pull the pin, Aim, Squeeze handle, Sweep ____ Test smoke and CO alarms each month side to side at base of fire) ____ Change your clocks, change alarm batteries ____ Inspect fire extinguishers annually ____ Replace smoke and CO alarms every ten years HEATING EQUIPMENT & FIREPLACE SMOKING MATERIALS & CANDLES ____ Avoid using space heaters if possible ____ Keep matches & lighters out of reach of children ____ Replace furnace filters once a year ____ Never leave cigarettes or candles unattended ____ Clean lint from behind and under clothes dryer ____ Empty ashtrays into non-combustible containers ____ Install a spark screen in front of fireplaces ____ NEVER smoke in bed ____ Have chimneys cleaned/inspected annually ____ Place candles in a sturdy holder, preferably one ____ Dispose of ashes in a metal container outdoors that protects the flame ____ Keep clutter away from heating appliances DEVELOP & PRACTICE A HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN ____ Develop a home escape plan that includes:  Crawl low under smoke, practice Two ways out, and plan a meeting place outside  Don’t hesitate, move quickly, fire moves fast and there isn’t time to try to save pets  Once outside, STAY outside  Teach all family members how to dial 911 in an emergency BREWSTER FIRE & RESCUE DEPARTMENT 1657 Main Street Brewster, Massachusetts 02631 Phone: (508) 896-7018 Fax: (508) 896-4245 Email: fire_dept@town.brewster.ma.us www.town.brewster.ma.us/brewfire
