HomeMy Public PortalAboutJanuary 1993COMMISSIONERS WILLIAM F. KOCH, JR., Mayor ALAN I. ARMOUR, Vice Mayor JAMES E. CROSS KATHLEEN S. WALLACE LAWRENCE E. STAHL January 1993 Dear Town Resident: TOWN OF GULF STREAM PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA Telephone (407) 276-5116 Fax (407) 737-0166 Town Manager E. SCOTT HARRINGTON Town Clerk RITA L. TAYLOR Happy 1993! We are writing to let you know the results of the recent sewer survey and to give you an update you on the A1A Australian pines. Further, we want to bring to your attention some crime -fighting information and some new information regarding yard trash pick-up. Sewer Survey As most of you are aware, the Town conducted a survey to determine the level of interest in having a sewer system in Gulf Stream. Those of you who are already on some type of sewer system did not receive the survey, but we thought you might be interested in the results. In all, 432 surveys were mailed of which, 157 were returned. The primary results of the survey are as follows: 1) The vast majority of septic tanks are functioning well and are a satisfactory method of sewage disposal for residents throughout the community. 2) There is very little interest in centralized sewage collection or in the expansion of the existing homeowner's system in the north end. 3) There is very little interest in a sewer feasibility study being conducted anywhere in the community. Based on these findings, the Town Commission has decided not to pursue any further studies on septic tanks nor to involve itself in the construction or operation of a centralized sewage collection system. Complete results of the survey and a full analysis are provided in a detailed report which is available at the Town Hall. Thank you very much to all of you who took the time to complete the survey. Australian Pines After our run-in last year with the state Transportation Department over the Australian pines on A1A, the Commission appointed a citizen's committee who have aptly named themselves the Gulf Stream Historic Highway Committee. The Committee is working with the state to get an historic marker for Al in addition to interviewing arborists as to what (Over Please) 100 SEA ROAD, GULF STREAM. FLORIDA 33483 January 1993 Page 2 can be done to save our remaining trees. Once the state completes their trimming program for safety purposes, scheduled for some time in the next three months, the Town will conduct its own trimming program to improve the health and longevity of the trees. The Committee really has done a yeoman's job in dealing with the state bureaucracy, and if all goes well, we hope to have a dedication ceremony next year to present our newly trimmed trees and unveil our markers. Crime Prevention We are very happy to report that, for the second year in a row, we have had a significant decrease in crime. While we are very grateful to the Chief and the entire police force, we also appreciate the efforts you, our residents, have taken to help reduce the number of thefts. And just as the police will continue to do all they can to prevent crime, we need you to continue with your efforts as well. Remember, always lock your doors and windows no matter how short a time you will be gone. In fact, it's a good idea to keep things locked up even when your home. And if you have an alarm, use it. Finally, notify the police when you are leaving town and If you see something, or someone, that looks suspicious, report it immediately by calling the police dispatcher at 243-7800. Most of the few recent burglaries we have had were not of the highly sophisticated cat burglar type but rather simple grab and run type thefts. These thieves look for the course of least resistance, such as unlocked doors and open windows, and normally won't bother trying to break windows or pick locks, never mind trying to get around an alarm. Therefore, the more difficult you make it for them, the less likely you are to be a victim. While no system is foolproof, these simple precautions can make a big difference. If you have any questions or would like more information, please call Chief Schultz at 278-8611. Trash Pick Up Last month the Town arranged to have yard trash (vegetative debris) picked up every Monday. While most everyone agreed this was better than having to call for a pick up, many of you asked if the day could be changed to the end of the week. Accordingly, the pick up day has been changed to Thursday beginning on. February 4. We hope all of you have a great year. As always, feel free to contact any of us or the town staff if we can be of assistance. Sincerely, THE GULF STREAM TOWN COMMISSION illiam F. Koch, r Mayor IL
