Dear friend and neighbor,
I would like to thank you for your interest in "Our Town" and take this opportunity to
give you a Gulf Stream update.
Our reliable Gulf Stream police force is highly qualified, ready to serve, and doing an
excellent job. There is certainly no need for alarm, but a "crime watch" effort here
could increase the police department's effectiveness. We will soon be organizing
"block captains" who will meet with Chief Schultz to establish a network with each of
our residents to encourage crime prevention through awareness. Don't forget to call
911 for emergencies and 243-7800 to request a Gulf Stream police officer at any other
time.
Some residents have expressed concern that the existing speed limit of 30 mph may
be excessive in neighborhoods with children. The police are planning to make a
recommendation to the Commission, but in the interim, let's all please make a special
effort to drive with care and caution.
Jeanne Breazeale should be nominated for sainthood for her continuing efforts to save
and restore our Australian pines. The Historic Highway Committee and Town staff
have prepared a Resolution to the Florida Legislature requesting permission to replant
these important historic trees. Jeanne's very informative report is available in Town
Hall for those who wanted to know everything about the species Casuarina
equisetifolia but were afraid to ask.
The Town has been approached to consider annexation of properties to the north of
Gulf Stream. A workshop meeting will be held on Thursday, January 20th, 1994 at
4:00 p.m. to discuss the many factors that must be considered before a decision can
be made. This date was chosen in an effort to make the meeting available when most
residents are likely to be in town and able to attend. A summary report of the area and
the issues pertinent to the Town will be available in Town Hall by late December.
The Commission recently strengthened ordinances to require that construction and
lawn maintenance contractors not be permitted to work outdoors on Saturdays from
December 1 to May 1. In addition, disruptive activities such as pile driving are
prohibited entirely during that period.'
Water is a precious commodity. Please remember to conserve whenever possible.
Single family homeowners, especially, should water lawns only when necessary.
Look into installation of moisture meters that turn the system off when there has been
sufficient rainfall, or contact Town Hall for additional tips and information.*
Decisions, or lack of them, by the Federal government regarding Haitian "boat people"
do have a direct effect on our town, county and state. We have had a number of these
illegal aliens arrive on our beaches in the past few months. They have not resisted
arrest and have been promptly taken into custody. After Immigration officials
photograph and "process" them, however, they are released and disappear into our
communities. All taxpayers are affected. I encourage you to contact Congressman E.
Clay Shaw, Jr. to express your opinion or to obtain further information. His local
office is 305-522-1800, the address is 1512 E. Broward Blvd., Suite 101, Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida 33301.
Your thoughts and opinions on all issues are important to good government and are
always welcome. Mark the following dates on your calendars:
