I am pleased to report to you that the Town of Gulf Stream received
very little damage from hurricane Andrew. There were a few trees
blown over and numerous limbs broken throughout the community.
Preparations for the storm were commenced at the announcement of
a hurricane watch. Town employees secured all three public
buildings and gathered vital records from the police department
and the Town Hall and removed them to a building several miles
inland for safe keeping. All residents that had previously
registered with the Police Department as being in need of assistance
in time of emergencies, were contacted by our officers and assisted
as necessary. A list of persons who had chosen to remain in their
residences was compiled from our door to door contacts. We also
made arrangements in advance to have extra man power to clear the
roadways. State Road AlA was blocked, and several other areas, by
fallen trees and other debris. The police sealed off AlA and the
entrance to Place AuSoleil to control sightseeing and potential
looting.
I have only listed a few of the requirements in preparation for an
emergency. I do this to show how important it is to make certain
that the Police Department has a current update of your records on
file listing your needs, showing who to contact regarding your
property and to impress upon you the need to take hurricanes
seriously.
We feel very fortunate that we were spared this time and our hearts
go out to those to the south of us who are suffering so greatly.
Sincerely,
&1 Ili Eroc
