HomeMy Public PortalAboutJuly 1990TOWN OF GULF STREAM PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA COMMISSIONERS WILLIAM F. KOCH, JR.. Mayor ALAN I. ARMOUR. Vice Mayor JAMES E. CROSS KATHLEEN S. WALLACE LAWRENCE E STAHL July 1990 Dear Neighbor: MAIL ADDRESS 100 SEA ROAD GULF STREAM, FLORIDA 33483 TEL.: GULF STREAM (407) 2765116 Town Manager FRANKLIN E. FLANNERY We are asking that you continue to observe watering restrictions even though the South Florida Water Management District has lifted the mandatory regulations. We are still bound to come into compliance with the State of Florida mandate that we reduce our per capita consumption of potable water 2?y 50$ the year 2000. In the short term we must reduce our 1988-89 consumption by 20% by 1993. If we can continue to reduce our use on a voluntary basis it may not be necessary to enact strict ordinances. However, if our consumption remains the same as recently or begins to rise, we will have no choice but to begin aop licy of town regulated, strict enforcement. Our water experts advise that watering lawns 3 days per week for 4 hours each time is more than sufficient to maintain lawn and other shrubs. Some residents still have not reduced consumption. This makes the situation most difficult for everyone. When we read our master meters IT IS THE TOTAL GALLONAGE THAT IS RECORDED. It is this figure to which the State pays special attention. If you are watering longer than 12 hours per week, your neighbor who is watering within the times allowed may well be subject to State sanctions just as if they did not reduce their watering. When we read the individual meters, it is evident that some residents are watering more than 12 hours per week. We are requesting that odd - numbered addresses water from 4:00 A.M. until 8:00 A.M. on Monday, Wed- nesday and Saturday and even -numbered addresses water from 4:00 A.M. until 8:00 A.M. on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. No watering of lawns and shrubs is allowed on Fridays. Automobile washing and hand watering is now allowed at any time. This is a situation that will not go away regardless as to how much rain we get. WE SIMPLY MUST SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF POTABLE WATER THAT WE USE. Also, please remember that your yard men or other household help are your employees. As such, you are responsible for their actions on your property. Kindly remind them of our request regard- ing this serious issue of watering. WE NEED EVERYONE'S COOPERATION. Thank you! 2 T/Ln ..5JL Franklin E. Flannery, Town Mang Hang this up. Follow these tips. 24 fft&ff ...eA1449114aaNa 1. Check your toilet for leaks. Put a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without Flushing, the coloring begins to appear in the bowl, you have a leak that is wasting many gallons of water a day. Fix it. 2. Stop using your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket. Every cigarette butt or tissue you flush away also flushes away three and one half to seven gallons of water. 3. Put a plastic bottle or "dams" in your toilet tank. Put rocks or sand in the bottle. Sink it in the toilet tank. Avoid the flushing mechanism. "Dams" can be purchased at hardware stores. Bottles and dams, if installed properly, can reduce the amount of flushed water without reducing toilet efficiency. 4. Take shorter showers. A typical shower uses five or more gallons of water a minute. Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. 5. Install water -saving shower heads or flow restrictors. Your hardware or plumbing supply store stocks inexpensive shower heads or flow restrictors that will cut your shower flow to about three gallons a minute. 6. Thke baths. A partially filled tub uses less water than all but the shortest showers. 7. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Before brushing, wet your brush and fill a glass for rinsing your mouth. 8. Turn off the water while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of warm water in which to rinse your razor. ...1.a Ade iuc aad laukduy 1. Fully load your automatic dishwasher. Every time you run your dishwasher, you use about 25 gallons of water. 4. Water during the cool parts of the day. Early morning is better than dusk since it helps prevent the growth of fungus. 5. 2. Set your automatic washing machine to proper water level. fi If you have a small load, set the r water level to low. Be careful not 6, to leave a high setting for small loads. 3. Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator. This puts a stop to the wasteful practice of running tap water to cool it for drinking. 4. If you wash dishes by hand, don't leave the rinse water running. If you have two sinks, fill one with rinse water. If you have only one sink, first gather all your washed dishes in a dish rack, then rinse them quickly. 5. Check faucets and pipes for leaks. Leaks waste water 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An inexpensive washer usually stops them. 1. Water your lawn only when it needs it. Step on some grass. If it springs back, it doesn't need water. 2. Deep -soak your lawn. When you dd water your lawn, water it long enough for water to seep down to the roots where it is needed. A light sprinkling that sits on the surface will simply evaporate and be wasted. 3. Aerate and dethatch your lawn. This also allows water to reach roots and keeps it from running off. Don't water the gutter. Position your sprinklers so that water lands on your lawn or garden, not on concrete or other paved areas. Also, avoid watering on windy days. Plant drought -resistant trees and plants. Many beautiful lush trees and plants thrive with limited irrigation. 7. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Mulch slows the evaporation of moisture. 8. Use a broom to clean driveways, sidewalks and steps. Using a hose is wasteful. 9. Don't run the hose while washing your car. Use a pail and soapy water. Spray to wet. Spray to rinse. Always use an automatic shut-off nozzle. 10. Tell your children not to play with the hose and sprinklers. - This practice is wasteful and should be discouraged at all times. 11. Check for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets and couplings. Leaks; outside the house can be extremely wasteful, especially when they occur in your main water line. 7b check for hidden leaks in your pipes, shut off all faucets and taps around the house for 15 minutes. If the water meter shows some movement during that time, you have a leak. San Diego County Water Authority 3211 Fifth Avenue San Diego, CA 92103
